Anyone traced this particular leak?

As was brought to my sudden and uncomfortable attention again this morning, in Brisbane's very damp weather, I have a particularly frustrating water leak... somewhere.

From time to time a torrent of water finds its way from somewhere and dumps itself on my right foot, which of course is applied to the pedal and so I cannot move it. This results in a very wet foot by the end of a trip in heavy rain.

So my question is - has anyone figured out where a leak that ends up here would be from, and more importantly how to fix it.

The Defender water ingress manual isn't what I'm looking for, but rather some more specific advice if anyone may have experienced this themselves.

if yours has the front vents under the windscreen.....make sure they are closed tightly......water gets in through them......
or it can come in through the screen seals.......

or even through the roof.....possibly in the join between the two roof panels or through the alpine window seals.....
then runs down the inside gutter and down the "A" pillar trim to find your foot.....
i have the front section of trim removed on lurch.....and it gets me on my right knee as soon as i go down a hill.......or hit the brakes.......



well.....thems my experiences.......as for fixes.....?
its a defender......wear wet weather gear and gumboots......

I noticed a more than usual pool of water under the pedals after a wash a few months ago. I traced the extra leak to a small hole under the windscreen just inboard of the bonnet latch. A rubber grummet in the hole had fallen out (there is also one on the passenger side).

A little thing easily overlooked, but it did let in a lot of water.

I've had that and it was traced back to the pedal box, apparently what was happening it was pooling, dropping on my feet, then rolling over to the passengers side also. We haven't had rain to test if this has solved my problem.

yes, wear thongs or gumboots.

I can put up with it, except when it's cold. And wearing something other than thongs isn't an option.

Two sources I have found.

1. Gasket under the pedal box (either clutch or brake). Fix is to replace the gasket, supplemented with a jointing compound.

2. The attachment for the bracket or hinge* at the bottom corner of the windscreen. Either the attachment to the windscreen frame or the bulkhead, but usually the former. This is a high air (and water) pressure area, and water can leak along the thread of the screw which is tapped into the bracket/hinge. The seal under the bracket/hinge has only a very small sealing area, and is easily damaged, plus the screw may work loose and the bracket/hinge may corrode and develop an uneven sealing surface. Fix is new parts if necessary, dress the surface surface of the bracket/hinge, assemble with a gasket sealant. I would not try to round the screw through the frame or bulkhead, as if only partly successful you will provide an ideal setup for corrosion, and it will be a pig to get apart again.

* Hinge on Landrover 110 and soft top Defenders, solid bracket on Defender. Interchangeable unless you want the ability to fold the windscreen.

John I don't see how the bottom of the pedal box issue (1 above) could have water draining DOWN onto ones foot?

Option 2 seems more likely. It's a bit hard to envisage so I'll have another look when the car is in front of me.

I took Monty to the LR Dealer just before the warranty expired last year and I told them the driver's door was leaking and that there was water on the floor. They told me they fixed it.

After all the rainfall a couple of weeks ago, I found more water on the floor and a still leaking driver's door (top of the door, just a little forward of halfway, only occurs after vehicle has been standing in rain and then I drive, not while driving in rain), so I took it back. They said they were unable to find the leak - couldn't replicate it.

Another burst of rain a few days ago and the leaks were still present and the alarm went off all by itself one afternoon after a particularly heavy shower.

I advised them to try parking the vehicle on an angle - uphill or downhill and and try again and lo and behold, their persistence paid off. They found TWO leaks. Lucky me!

The door is one - and a realignment seems to have solved it but we'll see. The other is the classic windscreen leak - water coming down behind the dash. They reckon a week to fix it. More importantly, they've asked LR Australia to see if they'll cover it under warranty, given that mine has expired. Hoping they'll fix it FOC or I'll be hitting you guys up for all the info on fixing it myself.
