View Full Version : Construct and Certifying a 90 as a 5 seater?

My lovely wife informs me some time ago that, "I don't mind the 90, looks good, I could see myself in one of those as a daily driver."
So while our friends at landrover are knocking 10k off them I thought I would entertain the idea.
Problem, I would need it to be a 5 seater. Bench seat facing forward in the back. Has anyone done or had it done and certified? Pics and contacts would be appreciated.
This is my one and only chance to become a 2 Defender household.:D
Cheers, Tod.

Its hard enough getting into the existing two rear seats.

Dont know how you would get in with a bench seat?

Would appear to be a case of emotion overriding common sense here mate..

Will be too small, to awkward to get into and will wear thin very, very quickly...

As much as you'd like it, its not for your current circumstances... ;)

Teres very little space left between the rear seats in the 90, so a 3 seat bench seat would be for very small people.

You could fit 2x Bench seats North to South, but you will need a Conversion cert for this, you may well find that the 90 could have already been tested and certified in this configuration.

Oh, come on Mike. Did I really need bringing back to reality that quick? Having never sat in the back of a 90 and it's intention as the family runabout. Yours and slugsworth reality check are most appreciated.
And I thought this forum was all about turning dreams into reality.

Sounds like what you need is the 100" model (prototype...)

Shame it never saw production...

Just an idea how about a bobtailed Range rover classic or a bobtailed 110 so you get the short overhangs but 4 doors? The RRC would be easier for around town with an engineered lift, bobtail and better air con than our defenders say a 90-94 model, 35 in tyres , new engine/gearbox/trans case etc

Yep, that will do nicely. The wife specifically likes the 90, as she will quite happily drive the 110 at the moment, just not as a daily driver.
Pity the 100 never came to fruition, a modern variant would be on the money.

Goodness me! How quickly imaginations run wild. Unfortunately a Range rover man I am not. The bobtailed 110 maybe, but for 40k (a new 90), another far away fantasy unfortunately.

I'd always wanted a 90, but the wife won't drive a manual and we needed a comfortable 7 seater, so we compromised and got a manual Discovery that I've been driving.... After 6 years in the discovery she loves it but still won't drive a manual....so I bought a manual 90 for me and now looking for a automatic Discovery for her.....we both get want we want::cool:...maybe look at your getting your fantasy in a different way?

Do you need it as a full time seat, just thinking what about removing the cubby box & fitting a seat in the front?
A lot of the early Defenders/Series vehicles especially the cab variants are complied as 3 seaters.
This may be an option.
Cheers

Do current ADRs permit side facing seats on new vehicles?
With a fair bit of internal surgery to the front of the wheelboxes, sunken floor and a custom made 2/3-1/3rd split rear seat, 5 passenger forward facing seating capability is possible, but ADR compliance is a whole different ball game.

go for it get the bench seats.
I have a series IIa like that still got it but it not on the road now.
My kids loved it we drive it all the time went camping etc.
They are 16 and 18 now and they were in primary school and they still talk about it and how fun it was. They would even get cup and collect the rain water that came in the back when it went around corners.
I reacon a forward facing seat would be a bit of a pain because they don't fold out of the way as good.
The only drama would be if you had real small kids that you have to do up there seat belts and cant just climb over and sort themselves out.
