Has anyone on here made their own mud flaps for their Defender from conveyor belt rubber?

The original mud flaps did not survive a trip to Ourimbah SF last year.

Thinking of attaching them to the back bar, rather than the aluminium body as per the original design.

Get some urethane sheet 4-5mm thick...

Almost unbreakable

Lara has them...

Made mine from insertion rubber (like conveyor belt) from Clark Rubber.
I made a custom bracket out of some square tube that bolts to chassis as I didnt want to attach them to the aluminium.

Haven't done a lot of hard work but are holding up fine so far.

Will try and get a couple of photos and check the thickness tonight.

I use the thick rubber bought from Clark Rubber, but one of them has been torn off by strong wind while cruising along stuart hwy:(. So insertion rubber may not be a good candidate

Has anyone made/fitted front mud flaps?

Kentkal,

I firmly believe in the need for mud flaps all round and My 90's had them fitted before delivery. They are obviously exactly the same as the 110 and 130's.

The rear mudflaps on a 90 is also mounted a whole lot srurdier than on it's bigger brothers using a angle directly mounted on the rear cross member. Possibly not a bad option for those with 110's that want to move theirs back.

Cheers Loubrey, will look into these. My rear flares looking like they have been sand blasted by gravel thrown up from the front wheels.

I have had a couple of rally cars and the mudflap material you want is the same as we use, its 6mm poly sheeting 1m x 1m and very tough.
You can get it from revolution racegear.
I am using it all under my puma to stop the sandblasting.
Big black cableties are the go.

The big problem with the D90 rear mudflap position is that at highway speed the mudflap bends up and the exhaust gas burns the rubber. Check out one that has done around 10,000kms and you'll find the corner is missing. Mine is just starting to "crisp" at 3,000kms. Defender Mike's has starting seriously burning itself smaller at 8,500kms:eek:! I think the position on the 110/130 is better, but not really an option on the D90.

130 are different to 90 both in where they fix to the vehcile and the shape of them.

I put front ones on mine. Made a bracket to fit on the side steps (also made myself) Bolted them on to the steps at the front. The rubber protrudes up into the wheel arch and down to about 250 mm from the ground. Used 10mm thick skirting rubber for the flaps. You can get skirting rubber at industrial rubber joints.

That explains my crispy mud flap, I wondered how that happened when washing it yesterday
