I like it.

Interestingly I got offered a 101 yesterday. aparently registered up until 2010, holden 202 in it, guy has been using it on a property since then so it still drives and isn't all rusted out by the sounds of it, no idea if it is ex military or not. 2 grand was his initial asking price. I know nothing about them or their rarity so no idea if this is a "Dude! Snap it up even if it is a wreck" price or a "one for the enthusiasts" price.

Any tips. Sorry to hijack the thread...

The 101s, except maybe the prototypes started off as military.

Your forward control sounds like its a (mostly) civilian SIIa or SIIb Forward Control, only about 3 thousand of each built.

The guy called it a "cab over" landrover. He didn't seem to know a great deal about it. I guess it would be worth a look if it is close by. So are they particularly sought after/rare or more of a niche thing? If it is halfway reasonable would it be a good resale/restoration prospect? I know it's a bit hard to say without knowing for sure but when you get people asking 2k for a standard series landy, if these are less common are they worth considerably more?

I think your talking about a civilian SIIa or SIIb, so this conversation should be in another place.

If you don't mind, I'll arrange for the posts to be moved.

No problem. ....I'm going to have a look tomorrow so if it is an ex army unit I'll post up appropriate details. Just as an aside, are they particularly popular with landy enthusiasts? I saw a few sites that all said the model was a failure hence the low numbers. As they are more the size of a truck than a landy series they would only appeal to a small percentage, unless of course military. The series IIa F/C was a failure as it was on the same chassis as the Aussie Military 109" and with the higher centre of gravity they had a reputation of falling over. The Rover diffs had a habit of breaking under the additional loads and the low ratio gearbox gave the vehicle plenty of torque for off road work, but there top speed was about 90KPH flat out at $$$$ per Km in fuel and overheating.

They modified the springs mounts, fitted stronger ENV diffs, made the track 4" wider and added an anti-roll bar for the SIIb but left the low ratio transfer box as a result they were not popular for long distance travel although the South African Army had at least 500.

There were only 3000 of the SIIa and a similar number of SIIb.

I have four two complete and enough parts to make one out of the remaining two.

Rover built prototypes for an updated civilian Forward control, the Llama with wide track, tilt cab etc, but British Leyland couldn't see a market for it so stopped it going into production. (How many Mitsubishi Canter 4WD do you see these days? The Llama was very similar)

What for? There's one just outside.

I would have thought the 2.5 na diesel 110 1.667:1 LT230 would have been preferable? Lower ratios in both ranges and can fit a 5 speed box.

You do realise the gearbox mainshaft is longer on transmissions fitted with the forward control/1 ton transfercase?

I think Bill means the PTO from the standard series wont fit the helical FC box.

I understood that you meant a series 2A/B all helical t/case, not LT95.But they still have a longer mainshaft than std boxes, and the PTOs are different in that they don't protrude into the t/case as far. but if you have the correct box to suit anyway, all's good.

Went to look at it and it is either a 2a or 2b FC, 68 or 69 model, not my cup of tea but if anyone is keen I can put you in touch with the owner if you PM me. Runs and drives, 186 motor, air brakes for trailer, he is after $2000 for it. Located brisbane northside.
