I have reluctantly decided I need to sell my 1995 Defender 130 dual cab, but unsure of best approach. One option is (obviously) to use as a tradein - minimum hassles, but also minimum price.
Another is to sell privately, though not sure about the delays and hassles that may be involved.
The 130 has a 6.5 V8 Chev diesel, and I have spent a lot on it, which I know I will not recoup, but I imagine a dealer is only likely to offer the redbook value for a 130.
I have already removed the two rooftop tents and roofrack I had on it, but it also has a PTO winch - maxidrive PTO with Thomas winch - should I remove that?
<snip> two large storage lockers (one wired for 12v accessories like a fridge) and undertray drawer, steel rock slider/sidesteps, fitted canvas seatcovers, 60l water tank, 60l aux fuel tank, snorkel, bullbar, driving lights, GME remote-head UHF and aerial, redarc triple battery system (with two orbitals as the aux batteries), big red air compressor, many components recently replaced/uprated. And it has twelve tyres - 6 BFG muddies with 70%+ tread on 4 rims, and 6 BFG ATs with 90%+ tread on 6 rims.

Don't trade it in, you will get screwed.
Stick it the markets section of this forum, people here will generally pay what it's worth because they generally know what it's worth...

Put it in the Markets section here.
It probably won't sell but we will know what it is and the sort of price you're looking at.
then
Put it up on ebay with a reserve. That should give you an idea of what the market is willing to pay.

Why? Sounds like the ideal defender?:D
The problem you will have with a dealer is they may offer LESS than redbook as its specialty modified and has a further reduced market so will sit longer in their yard or have to be wholesaled out. This is not to criticise your mods as they sound excellent and i would love to see a few photo's and even hear what the dealer offers you as a trade compared to buying the new car/4x4 for cash.If i had the spare money i would be interested to! If you do get a trade price let a few of us know even with a pm thanks.
Some will chop a few dollars from their margin and slap it on your trade others will be more "honest" and just give you the wholesale and discount the cars price as it all come down to changeover, (the dollars you have to pay to get car in your hands). My usual tactic is to ask em for the best changeover and the margin sliders will ask "what do you want for your trade" to which the best response is $1 as long as the changeover is right;) using this approach (with the exception of 1 rip-off merchant) i got within $1000 at 8 or 9 different dealers, on a 28k trade in, when looking for my wifes current car. This was at both new and used car dealers as we where looking for a big family "taxi" and ended up with a multivan with a good discount after getting the same trade values on a used voyager, torago and a used mutlivan that had a shocking gearbox.
Good luck.

As others have said never trade or straight sell to the stealers. They've rightfully earned that name and will tell you all sorts of porkies like "can't sell LRs ...no one wants them" etc.
If they could get them at their rip off prices they'd jump at it. And then stick a great big bit on top to get what you can get privately!
I've sold a Td5 and 300 Tdi Defender and a boat on carsales.com and got my asking price or very close to it on all 3 occasions.
They were pretty quick sales as well except the 300Tdi where a bloke who reckoned he was a copper tried to stitch me up. But when I put it back on the market a bloke arrived with cash in a bag........:D
Good luck.

Very interesting mods, love to hear it going down the street or in anger climbing a hill.
There is nothing wrong with advertising in the lot, here in the markets, car sales, trading post or 4x4.
At a guess, I think you would attract more the just Landy people with what you have done.
Agree with all the others about the dealers. After I bought my 110 I sold my rodeo ute on Gumtree. Bought the 110 through car sales.
Wish I could buy it, or should I say, wish I was allowed to:D

When selling our Pioneer camper I put it on Gumtree, Qokka and Exploroz (about 20 bucks from memory) and sold it via Exploroz for another bag of lovely money.
Where do people get all this folding stuff?[bigwhistle]
Not much response from the other 2 sites but didn't really need it anyway.

I've see this Defender at least once a week as I drive along the main rd and see it looking out at me. It looks to be very well set up. I've often wondered if the owner is a member here, now I know!
