View Full Version : Noisy Steering?

Hi Fellas,
Just a quick one on steering.
The P38 howls or groans when the wheel is turned to the left.
This also happened with my old classic and our other Discovery.

To save me climbing underneath, maybe someone can explain the Landrover made phenomenon.
Is it the pump, the damper or some tired old gentleman hiding under the bonnet?

Cheers,
Shirley.

This might be worth a go, There is a product called Lucas power steering stop leak available from most parts shops. I have used it before on both classics I owned and it put a stop to a judder on one and untold noises and leaks on another. Wont cure an old Gentleman though.
Check the condition of the Serpentine belt.

Checked the level of the power steering Fluid? .... (Low)

Hi Wayne,
Like you say, it's worth a go.
It's a weird problem that seems to be in all of the rangies and Discos up to the late 90's.
Had the exact same noise on the old Classic, our old D1 and now the P38.
Even stripped the pump and fitted new seals and all that stuff to no avail.
Have never tried the additive tho...... So why not? I'll be off to the auto shop in the morning and just maybe it will get rid of the noise on Hard left hand turns.
Have already replaced the belt about a month ago which had no effect but it did need it.
I reckon it would have snapped within the next 3 months for sure.
I must reseal the hoses too as the crimped joints are beginning to leak.
Will let you know the outcome.....

Cheers fellas,
Shirley...

I am only a bottle blonde to cover the grey

Mmmmm ... Thought I'ld get a reaction :p

But to be fair, it is the first thing ... you would have asked the "customer"

On another front .... I've never had this noise happen to my rides (3 Rangies n 1 Disco) .... But it does sound as tho your getting an "air-rating" on the pump turning left .....

After thought .....
From memory of another person having a similar problem ... Answer was that a worn front pump seal, sucking air "into" the system causing air-ration .... Apparently it does not leak out oil, just sucks in air.

Cheers
Mike

Hi

I had the exact same problem after Land Rover here in Japan replaced the steering Gear Box on my good old 95 P38. The noise was really horrible and only when turning to the left. Also it never happened when the car are "cold" but just about 1h after continuos drive or very quickly on winding road.
They fixed the problem by replacing two major metallic tubes that comes out from the steering Gear box. I suspect they screwed something while replacing the Steering Gear box.

Hope this will help.

Onya Mike,

Seems like the pump is the culprit although I would expect to see foamy red oil in the resevoir at some time after some heavy steering. So far, zero, nothing. No bubbles in the oil at all, either cold, tepid or hot.
Will need to do some more investigation, hey? Maybe even the damper??
A bit unwell today so I am sure the noise will be there waiting for a while..
Thanks Fellas,
Shirley..

.... Agree ....

Maybe even the damper??
.

Just disconnect it .... Don't go buying a new one ... It will steer ok without it (Just very light steering)

Wonder if a PM to JC in Tassie might prove enlightening to the problem :) (hint)

Get well ......
Mike

Well, the Lucas product seems to have done the trick,
It took a few days to work itself in but the steering is back to normal and nice and quiet.
Wayne's remedy work a treat...
Anyway, please keep it in mind and stash a bottle in the utility box, it's a product that can't hurt at all... Thanks Wayne.

Great to hear that it fixed up the steering.
I have a bottle of that in the garage and now might add a bit to mine to stem a possible leak that I suspect is starting in the steering box

Glad to hear it halped. I heard about this Lucas stuff when looking at my similar problem years ago, as I said it sorted problems on both my Classics. As You concur, it cant hurt and for the price is well worth a try.
