Telstra 4G Data

Here is something to think about if you are considering a Telstra 4G wireless data connection or 4G phone.

If you live or work within the 4G data zone you can indeed expect very high data speeds both up and down.

From the 10th of Jan I was on my first full billing period for my 4G wireless connection. Yesterday the 24th of Jan my 4gb of data was gone...

There was no downloading of large files or other content involved I have a home account for that stuff. I only use the wireless on working days so all it took was 10 days to kill my data allowance.

The speed may be fantastic while you have data available but at the speeds available don't expect it to last long.

4gb over a phone is a lot..you must have been doing a lot of "testing" :)

I'll be interested in a follow-up post in a few months to see if the speed is still there. At present you'd expect speeds to be exceptional coz there's no-one on the LTE network.

I don't have a 4G phone. I have a 4G Wireless modem.

In the mornings the speed is way up there. As people arrive in the city and connect the speed drops back a bit but they are still high.

Very unlikely the connection isn't shared.

if this is a wireless 4G dongle/modem connected directly to the computer then it shouldnt be possible to have the connection hijacked. On the other hand if you are connecting to the modem via wireless then that is a different story.

In windows there is a setting where you can log network traffic. I would turn that on for a few days then do the slog of reviewing the logs and find out if there is any suspicious activity as it could be caused by a virus or trojan.

Also dont forget downloads and uploads count toward your 4GB

Its not a smart phone. It is a sierra wireless 4G modem.

The computer is scanned daily for trojans and spy wear.

The computer is set-up to only get windows updates when connected to the home network.

The cautionary tale here is that 4G is very fast (up and down) if you are in the high speed zones. You will burn your data allowance very quickly at 4G speeds.

Surely you will only burn it if you are transferring data. It wouldn't matter if you were on 3G or 4G. The only difference is that the 4G will download the same data faster.
