80" frog house

Hi guys,

Found this 80" on a farm today, spotted by a work mate working in a bluegum plantation next door, so had to enquire. The bloke didnt seem to keen but said to have a look.
The poor little girl was in bad shape underneath, springs expanded with rust, holes every where in the chassis and firewall inside, lots of beach work I rekcon, but never the less an original landy ,just what I wanted a parts donar for Klonk.
However after the first obligatory $500 offer was refused he suggested that he thought $2000 was more along his line, so a polite but hastie retreat was made. Bugger
David counted 7 frogs when we opened the bonnet.

I dunno. That looks like a real 80" cab. Its got the hand throttle so I wonder if its got a pto etc too. The bloke must have a fair idea of values so is hoping for more. Maybe you can split the difference.
Those dash bits are selling for heaps now too. Does it have dated wheels and matching numbers?

I agree with Keith - I have seen a speedo fetch $500 on fleabay.

Everything appears to be on it and $500 is what a scrappie would give him - try him for a thousand,

hi steve a very good find the gem on that lr is the truck cab very rare the owner is correct on his price also ifs all matching numbers its easy to get a pair of front guards then we have another on the road regards jim

It is of course nice to think it's another opportunity to get another 80" restored, but by the time you put a new chassis and bulkhead, possibly replace a few of the panels, it would cost a fair bit to do to fulfil a romantic notion.

I think your experience, Steve, is similar to the one I had with the 80" for sale up in GinGin. Same rare truck cab (although the one I looked at was without dents), so was appealing, but the farmer wasn't happy with an offer below $3500!!!:eek: At least at $2k your guy is closer to realistic:angel:. I offered $600 to the one up north, so we're aligned in what we think they're worth in real "put your hand in your pocket" money.

I got a mint chassis and bulkhead, along with all the other bits to put a complete 80" together, for $2k so I agree with you and newhue - it's not worth $2k. But like Charlie says, maybe try him for up to $1k? If you end up with bits to sell, let me know as I could be interested in a couple of things off it. (Ammeter, drivers side door top, air filter unit, tailgate, etc, etc)

Good find Steve,

And from your description only needs a new chassis, bulkhead, some panels, looking at the amount of oil residue around the rocker cover possibly a total engine rebuild, new springs, wipers...... budget on about 20 to 30k for a rebuild and you should have a really nice 80" with truck cab.

Would be nice to see it saved though, would even make a good garden feature with all the good bits salvaged?

Chassis and bulkheads are absurdly easy to repair and fabricate new parts for, if you have the most basic of High school metalwork skills. If you don't have the skills, don't be concerned because there are heaps of people out there who can show you and heaps of TAFE colleges which teach welding, for a fraction of the price of a new chassis.

No one should ever be put off by a rusty chassis, or bulkhead on an 80" - just use it as bargaining chip to bring the price down :D

I think Steve has done the right thing to walk away from it $2000 but I also think that the owner is not being unrealistic, given the truck-cab and possibly matching numbers as Jim has mentioned,

Thanks for the comments, Ive been thinking about it quite a bit. It would be a shame to use it for parts.The landy has only had the one owner, so I guess there is quite a bit of sentimental value by the owner if he knows its going for parts. He may look a bit more favorably if it was going to be rebuilt, so will try to have another look, dont know if the engine runs or why it was parked up.

Keith there is no PTO fitted and I didnt check for numbers but I would say they would all be there,I didnt see any bodgy stuff on it,everything was as per factory, except for the 20ltr drum as the fuel tank under the seat.

Jim I didnt really appreciate that the 80'' truck cabs were hard to come by.

One of the blokes at work came up with a good idea of using the barter system, Farmers always need a mechanic at some time. labour doesnt cost me, so maybe 4 or 5 days labour is better than destroying klonks repair budget and it is cheaper for the farmer than using a workshop from town.

Top idea about the exchange of labour Steve! :D

They are often looking for someone who can weld and fabricate as well as you can, not to mention drive a truck or tractor for them.

Be careful though, or you might end up with as many Rovers as the rest of us :D
