View Full Version : Engine malfunction light on

I just had a service on my 2008 Defender (Puma engine). The local mechanic installed an aftermarket (Ryco) air filter.
The engine light came on after a couple of starts. Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you know whether the ECU can respond to a non LR air filter, or oil filter - the fuel filter is LR? The mechanic says no, but strange things happen. The vehicle seems to go just the same.
One of the MAF sensors is just after the filter and it occurred to me it may have sensed a change in air flow through the new filter.
The light did come on once before for no apparant reason. I took it up Perth for Barbagallos to have a look but by the time I got there the light had gone out. They didn't tell me what it was all about.
Any thoughts very welcome.

Try running a standard filter; and if the falult re-occurs my money would be on the problem being an EGR valve issue. Have you noticed any black smoke/loss of power/surging?

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks Tim. I will try a standard air filter and see what happens. No black smoke or loss of power. Since my last post the light went off for about 50km but has come back on again. Interesting. Thanks again for reply.

No worries Bill. If it keeps doing it with the standard air filter, (and the car's out of warranty), it may be worth pulling the valve off and checking it. Sometimes the little electric motor that drives the valve can start sticking, so you may get away with just cleaning everything up.

If you need a valve and LR don't have one send me a PM.

Cheers,

Tim

My engine light( puma)came on as a result of some poor quality diesel, in any case it should log a fault code into the computer, of you can find someone to plug it in and read it, that should narrow it down for you, wouldn't suspect a new air filter to be the problem..Hope this helps

i could be wrong but i didn't think you could get a Ryco air filter for the puma yet. Maybe you have a TD5 filter instead. I don't think this would give an engine light though.
