The white markings under the chin look like that of an alpine copperhead.

Yeah, my guess would be a Highlands Copperhead too, with the white barred lips and location where it was found. This one is quite pale grey. Nice!~:)

I don't know what it is but to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, my best guess was White-lipped Snake (Drysdalia coronoides).

Yep White lipped snake , I stand corrected.
This one must have been on Holidays in the ACT as they reckon it's
Distribution and habitat

The White-lipped Snake is quite common in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and occurs throughout the forested areas of southern Victoria, often in wetter habitats.

Na.. well I guess it depends on what web site you look on... they are fairly common on Mount Kosciusko and surrounds.. and are found (although not as common) in the ACT too..

White-lipped snake (Drysdalia coronoides) at the Australian Reptile Online Database | ReptilesDownUnder.com (http://www.reptilesdownunder.com/arod/reptilia/Squamata/Elapidae/Drysdalia/coronoides)

I came across a White-lipped snake on the track between Charlotte pass and Mount Kosciusko. I believe it is one of the few snakes in Australia ,if not the only one, that manages to survive above the snow line.
