Thinking I would like to buy a set of 6 Mickey Thompson's MTZ from the US.

They are about half the price of the equivalent tyre over here !!

Has anybody done this before ?

What are the problems if any ?

What about freight costs ?

Thanks in advance for any comments or experience.

Cheers
Grant

Got the quote back from Tyre Rack USA.

BFG KM2's for $245 AUD's - Nice price......

But freight is $110 per tyre or $660 in total.

Full price $2145 AUD's.

I have also got local quotes for KM2's - $350

And Baja MTZ's - $359.

Fitting and balancing included.

Bottom line, I will be buying local.

To that you will need to add GST and other duties of about $350.

Sure you can split the shipment and you may or may not get away with it - if you split the shipping price per tyre will most likely go up.

I ordered 5 KM2's from tirerack mid last year. There wasn't any local stock in any suitable sizes when I needed a new set. With shipping and duty etc. it was still about $150 cheaper than the best local price I could find.

If I hadn't needed them urgently I would have ordered 3 and then another 2 or 3 a couple of weeks later to stay under the $1k duty limit. That way I would have saved another $250ish if I remember correctly.

Shipping cost was per tyre by fedex. Arrived in less than a week with typical fedex efficiency.

I would order from tirerack again if there was a good saving to be had. Completely painless experience.

Tirerack have been great, fast reply to all enquiries and very willing to arrange shipment, however they have said that there is 45 to 60 day wait on KM2's.

Locally, MTZ available now and KM2's on Thursday.

Another:thumbsup: for tire rack. Bought a set of tyres or tires? For my wife's jeep patriot. Cost half what it would here including shipping, fitting, balancing and alignment.
I will definitely be buying from tire rack again.

Yes they are cheap in the us but hope you dont need any warranty claims even with the lack of claims they do pass but think of this they do make stuff ups on orders as well i have heard it happen....
It is very hard for us in the bis to match the cost but we do our best as we can.
I will do my best to give any one my best price i can but most of all top service and back up service..

The cost of shipping is increasing on orders to Oz, I guess the courier firms have cottoned on the amount of stuff being sent out here. It's just cost me a fair bit more than I expected to have some bits sent out for our classic car, however even with that it's still *significantly* cheaper than the same parts bought here. The smallest markup I found locally was 300%....

Don’t despair,

I have found some very competitive prices locally, once you cost in the freight some even cheaper than Tirerack.

The service that I have experienced during this "shop around" in Aus has been spot on.

I have mentioned this on other threads but I did the tirerack deal when the AUD$ was strong against the greenback. Five KM2's came in at AUD$960, so under the duty threshold, but yes, $100 a tyre in freight. This still saved me $100 per tyre, plus I had them in 8 days vice 12 weeks if purchased locally.

I would prefer to keep the business in Oz or West Oz, but how much a premium does one have to cop?

The market place votes with its feet (and wallet) so with a Disco 3 looking to get new boots soon, I am keen to see if local businesses are challenging the online format.

It's my understanding that duty applies to cost landed here in Australia so did you get freight for under $40, Regards Frank.

No - only on the cost of the goods themselves (no freight) if under $1000. However if the price goes over $1000 then you pay duty on the goods and then GST on the goods, freight and duty and then a customs admin fee on top of that.

I don't have any qualms buying worldwide if the local market cannot support competitive pricing.
Why should anyone have to suffer overheads beyond common sense to stay in the local market?
