View Full Version : Ute Tub - Tread Strips

Hi All,
I placed an advert in the Market section - but unfortunately nobody answered it.
My ute tub tray is missing various tread strips.
I must not be the only person that has this problem. What have others done?
I don't want to purchase a second hand tub - just for the strips!
I considered getting some made up - but that means that I would then need to replace ALL of them, and they are no longer original.
Does anybody know if I can purchase off ebay? UK?
Does anybody know a good wrecker?
Thanks,
The Grey Ghost

Hi Grey Ghost
How much of a hurry are you in for these and do you need all the ones on the floor ?
I can go over after lunch and look in one of my 2A wrecks to see if they are worth salvaging.
If necessary, could you get them regalvanised ?

Hi Wrinklearthur,
I can wait - no problem. Ideally I would like them in the next few weeks, but I am happy to wait.
At this stage I haven't been able to get them anyplace!
I need to check - but from memory I need:
1 x side length (long)
2 x floor length (long)
4 x top of boxes length (short)
I have considered:
Wire brush the strip to bare metal, and painting them.
Wire brush the strip and leave them as-is.
Wire brush the strip and regalvanise them.
Thanks for your help on this.

PS - Tassie is one of my favorite parts of Australia. I have lived/worked there in the past, even had my honeymoon there!

AFAIK they are a current part, so you can get them new.

Hi Lotz-A-Landies,
Thanks for the info - any suggestions on who can supply them new? (I haven't had any luck finding them, but I also don't know many of the suppliers).
Thanks,
The Grey Ghost!

lrdirect.com have them, part # 330615. Also checkout part #s 304871, 330717, 308206, I don't know which ones you need and the parts manual isn't very clear.

Grey Ghost,
I'm after the same parts (and also have a wanted advert in Markets).
I've been offered a couple of complete tubs but they were too far away.
Because I need corner cappings and some other parts from the tray I'm considering looking for a parts vehicle but I'll be interested to hear how you go sourcing the new parts if you go down that route.

Hi Colin
How about making up a list of what you need?
I have a tub on a wrecker that has been hacked by a PO, apart from a couple of panel the rest is for the scrappy, so as I have indicated to Grey Ghost, the more galvanised steel bits I pull off, makes the job of getting the aluminium to the scrappy easier.
By the way, I'm right into barter. ;)

Thanks for the offer Arthur,
I can imagine the difficulty of packaging/freighting the tread strips !
I need :-
All 4 corner cappings, welds fractured & tubes missing, probably from canopy hoops rattling around (with a load tied on the top ?!).
4 long tread strips, mine are either missing or have the ends nearest the tailgate broken off.
1 bracket for the spare wheel to rest against,1 of mine is missing.
1 spare wheel well, mine is very, very rusty.
The tailgate has been repaired by a blacksmith judging by the lumps of iron and square nuts that have been used. I think I have a spare one somewhere.
Because I need that many parts I'm thinking another tray may be the best option. All I have to do is swap a few pop-rivets for solid rivets and an S3 tray could become an S2 tray.....

Hi Gromit & Wrinklearthur,
While I was waiting on Wrinklearthur's kind offer, I fired off a request for a quote from lrdirect.com.
I am worried about freight costs because I need:
2*long strips (on the tub floor). (330615)
1*long strip (on the side of the box) - (330615)
   1*short strip (vertical front panel) - (330717)
   4*short strips (top of box) - (304871)
I will let you know the quote when it comes back - their website did say "we will answer within 1 hour" - which was approximately 12 hours ago. As I sent the request last night at approximately 8pm, in theory it was morning in the UK and I was hoping for an answer this morning... No answer.
I would prefer (hopefully) to get them from Wrinklearthur - which I think will be the cheapest option. I think that the freight will be very expensive because of the long lengths required.
I too have looked at buying 2nd hand tubs, but they too have damage, and always seem to be far away, and I don't need the tub so it seems a waste to buy one!
I will update you all if/when the quote arrives.
Thanks.
The Grey Ghost.

Well I had a look at the bits in the tub I have here.
The front horizontal has been cut and portion missing.
The long floor has two missing out of the four.
The tub is off a late 2A 6cylinder, so no wheel arch top strips.
The vertical front short strips none.
So there are two long strips for Grey_ghost.
May have a bit more luck with some of Gromits wish list, the corner capping's look ok, the wheel well is serviceable and I think there maybe a wheel bracket also.
If I ask Ranga kindly tomorrow, there is some space on his roof rack and that may be the best way I can get the bits across the Bass Strait.

Hi All,
Well lrdirect.com has been a dead end. Remember that I was asking about only the tread strips (not any of the capping). Over-night here is the response:
Thank you for your email.
I have been trying to source these parts for you but unfortunately none of my suppliers have any stock.
Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Best regards,
Paul.

Wrinklearthur - thanks very much for the long strips, really really appreciated.
If you can't manage to get them over via the long boat, I'm happy to pay for freight. Just let me know please. :)

Hi Grey Ghost,

Would they be the same as series 3?

I just aquired a vehicle that will be wrecked, probably keeping the tub to turn into a trailer but will not use the strips at this stage. From the looks of it the gal is very good and it is a full set but I can confirm once the car is collected in the next couple of days if you like (lots of stuff in the back at present).

I have sent these by courier before (too long to post) and they are quite cheap depending on location.

Hi pfillery,
I'm not sure if Series 3 tread strips are the same as Series 2...
Anyone have the answer?
I'm happy to take you up on the offer - providing that they work.
At the start of this thread I have included a picture of one of the long strips that I have - if that helps?
Fantastic news! (More than happy to pay for the courier and contribute to your own Land Rover running fund!)
:D

The strips on my series 3 look the same as that.

I'll keep you posted as soon as I have assessed them. Hoping to pick up the vehicle today.
