Got this on our email.
Tell all your family/ friends/ business acquaintances -
in fact tell everybody about this!
For all Australian respondents..
Telstra Phone book
For anyone contemplating using the Sensis directory service number, 1234,
DON'T!
Sensis, as you may or may not know, is a subsidiary of Telstra.
The 1234 number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance
number, but this time with outrageous costs attached:
40c to call the number, then 4c A SECOND!
By law, Telstra must provide a FREE directory assistance number.
They choose however not to pass this number on to the public
The free number is 1223
Thumbs down to Telstra for finding a way to 'charge', for a service that
is supposed to be provided for free.
Of course, feel free to forward this on.

It appears the 1223 is only free to Telstra customers. There is a very old news link here: Need a number? Call 1223 - it's cheaper - National - www.theage.com.au (http://www.theage.com.au/news/National/Need-a-number-Call-1223--its-cheaper/2004/12/12/1102786955372.html)

I wonder why we have not got a national telephone directory. I come across people regularly who are not not Telstra customers and do not appear in the Telstra Directory or on the White Pages web site. Optus and others do not issue directories, and, how does one know which alternative service supplier they are using? A particular gripe of mine now that just about everybody has a mobile 'phone is that few mobiles are listed in the print directory or on line.

ts telstra just trying to get out of there service obligations again.
I think they should break up the company and separate retail from the network.
they should have to give equable time on the TV to promoting the free service that they agreed to have as a community service.

You need to be a tad more patient. The machine works pretty well actually if you don't talk jibber. Two trials, first one, right on the money, second one stuffed it up intentionally then a telephonist clarifies the information.
The other number I'm aware of is 1224.
1234 is a rip off.
