View Full Version : Defender Double Cab Canopy - where to buy?

Guys,
Many of you have seen my Defender, for those that havent, the rear tub still has the original canvas canopy and hoop sticks and i have included internally an ally cage to provide some security (see attached photo). Inside are some storage lockers, full width (between arches) drawer and 60L Engel.
This generally works well but access into the back (specifically fridge) is a bit of a pain as I cant get in from the side.
Im beginning to think about starting again and putting a new hard back on, something like what NeneOverland in the UK sell:
CamelBAC aluminium storage canopies for Defender 90, 110 and 130 pick-ups and double cabs (http://www.neneoverland.co.uk/4x4services/camelbac_storage_canopy.php)
Does anyone know if anyone sells Nene products in Australia, or anyone that sells things like it?
The other option is to get a fabricator to make something from scratch, but suspect many $$$.
I also havent totally given up on the idea of leaving the basic setup as is but putting the fridge on a drop-down slide, but even that is not ideal is i would still need to contend with the drop-down tailgate.
thx
Jon

Not very helpful but i prefer the look of your current setup over the NeneOverland hard backs...

I investigated having Nene Overland ship a canopy over for my 130. They were happy to fabricate and ship it for assembly but the numbers did not add up for me - and that was before I even considered shipping and customs. I think it was 1100 pounds or something.
I got a few quotes and ended up going with a metal fabricator in Canberra. I think from memory it cost about 2.5k which I was very happy with. Other quotes I was getting were at least double that. Happy to give you the details if you PM me. Has been water and dust proof so far (touch wood).

There hard to come by. I've had a couple of quotes here in Melb from $1000 to $2000, and that's with no shelving or legs to remove it with.
I'm making my own. I'll do like a rough-ish one, then when I'm happy with it, I'll make a another with all new bits and paint it so it looks good.

I have talked to nene, we do some business with them from time to time, and if we brought in a container then it would be worth it.
I talked to Daniel at mulgo, and he reckoned 3/4 k for one to be built here, if nene can do a Ckd version air freight could be come a possibility
You could drop the fridge slide out of the side.

Thanks Justin,
quick question, whats Ckd??
One of my thoughts was to mount the fridge so that I could open one of the side doors (upwards) and have it pull out and drop down so that it was at a more manageable height.
thx.

I am still waiting a response from Land Rover dealers over here in WA to find out what the Hard Top is mentioned in the following CarPoint blurb:

If you scroll down to optional features a Hard Top - body coloured is mentioned for just $570. I was hoping to get an order in during the main event which ended 31.1.12, seems like I might wait for the next main event? Now do I want a Firenze Red 110 ute... I think I do. Should get a Bronze Green one to match Lionel with a Tan Cargo Tilt.
Cheers Nigel

In the UK that option is an ally Ifor-Williams (agricultural manufacturer / Supplier of stuff) canopy.
Its no-where near good enough for touring and has a open upwards tail-gate. Its good enough to keep the sheep-dog dry and stop a sheep escaping!
Mine came with a Truckman fibreglass back on it - that was very good in the quality department but again wasnt suited to touring / side access / hanging shelves off it.

I've got my fridge coming out the back tailgate, and it will have draws beside that, so the top half can be used as the general space for the camping/cooking gear etc. If the comp will let me, I'll get a pic up of the "basics" but have'nt done the draws yet.

Hey Jon I'll buy the internal "cage" off you if you decide to go with another type set up down the track. It would be perfect for the back of my double cab. :D:D

"Hard Top - body coloured" refers to the colour matching of the cabin roof.
You may have seen some defenders with a coloured body and white roof (which was the norm up until approx 10-12yrs ago) while others have coloured body and coloured roof.

I will try and get some pics done later, as for the hard tops, I am in talks with the said company with regards to bring in 110 dc 110 hcpu and 130 hcpu rear cargo area canopy.
If we can get the numbers up...

Still the norm if you buy a commercial in the UK. Hard Top specification (no rear windows) still comes with the white roof...

On my 130 DC I have a steel canopy which I THINK came from Forestry Victoia or some such.
It's rusy but its pretty good and with big doors at rear andboth sides access isvery good and this is what I li aboutit.
You can't get them new but a good one turned up on ebay recently for wel under $1K. I would have bought it (it was in much better nick than mine) but someone beat me to it.
Click on the link in my signature to see the canopy I mean.

I had mine made from a SWB hardtop from a series !!A (1969 model). You can pick them up cheaply. I haven't cut mine to allow side entry, but as these are cheap to start with you could modify it however you wished. Mine came with a tropical roof which I have left on. (My roof rack goes over the top). I paid$300.00 for it but I'll bet you could get one for nix. Mine was totally stripped down, new glass fitted including a front piece ans it cost a total of $1950.00. It looks classy on my Puma.

I looked at doing that with my old IIA roof but the dimensions were wrong - too long and not wide enough. Got any pics to show us how you did it?

depends what you want to put in there I guess...
fire wood, hay, wet dogs, sheep, harsh chemicals, hunting game or stinky stuff.
you could incorporate larger gull winged doors into it too I suppose.
then your stuff is under lock and key too

My canopy was made about 12 years ago by Spraycraft at Mt Kuring-gai. I believe they are still at it. It's very well made and I'm still delighted with it. One of the most useful things I've ever had made. I've included a slightly out of focus photo, and yes it's on a tray, but I'm sure they could make what you want.

I've been head scratching over rear setup for years now, for want of something better I fabricated a frame to hold the Oztent (up high but just below roof height) and this has served us fine for the last few major trips. However fridge access has always been a nuisance (not to mention the wheel wells) and now I have 255/85s, I don't like the thought of hanging 2 spares so far behind the rear wheels (on swing away carriers I mean). I think the best option for me will be a tray with the 2 spares mounted in front of the tray as low as possible. I can then store fuel in a tank below the tray and have draws in back (below the tray) for stove etc.
This has worked well and stuff has surprisingly not become too wet or dusty. Those spares are 235s and take up enough space, without putting 255s there, fridge is at passenger side front and somewhat inconvenient.

Did anyone discover whether Nene will/can supply a flat packed canopy?
If not, I too would be interested in getting one of these along with some other parts shipped from UK. Perhaps if we had enough interest we could organise a a 20ft container. They'll hold 36m3, so we'd need a few people to make it worthwile.
I particularly like this idea with the deep sides, allowing access to the flat top though you'd need a decent coach-builder to do the tub mods back here in Aus. Anyone know of one?

Whilst I was working for Hannibal Australia I spoke to Neneoverland, about the rear canopy, bottom line was they are not interested one little bit, and they only supply as a complete unit.
I believe the design is a copy of a South African Unit.
I also spoke to Daniel ( Mulgo ) about these units and his estimated costs were $4500/6000 to have one made.
As part of our on going commitment with Patriot Roof Racks, I have talked in detail about Patriot supplying CKD rear canopys, and it is something they are very keen to take forward.
Price wise 3/4k. I think if i went back to them with a number of firm orders then, it would show commitment from here, and speed up the process.
Both 110 Dc and the 130 HCPU would be the go.
I am happy to push further if any one is interested.
As for a 20ft container, you could get maybe 50 CKD units in a 20ft, say $75,000, 1000,000 in value plus shipping, plus tax and duty on the whole shipment, ( $11250 ).
My method would be LCL, far cheaper........again this depends on amounts..
As for the cut out tub on the Nene 130, that conversion came in at 0ver 8k..

If 750 p/u, wouldn't 50 units be $37,500?

75000 to 100000 for the value of 50 ish kits, at wholesale prices.
Not 750 each. Retail would be between 3/4k each.
Lcl less than a container load.
