View Full Version : "Chipping" a TD5?

With Tombie going off line, and a number of new products coming onto the scene, would anyone care to recommend their suggestions for the most cost effective options for improving my 04 D2a TD5 performance. I'm basically interested in enhancing low down torque/towing capacity whilst maintaining some semblance of economy and most imprtantly trouble free operation.
At the moment I'm looking at the product that my "regular" excellent service provider Franzone in East Perth supports, albeit $880 seems a little steep - ie double Tombie @ $440.
Then of course there are the other enhancements (exhaust, intercooler, boost etc).
I'm dangerous because I don't even know enough to differentiate between chips and plug and play types and/or tuneable by me versions despite reading/searching the forum.
Cheers Gavin

Hi I fitted a chipped ecu from T R S in south australia in my 99 130 dual cab. also upgraded to a intercooler from a D2a which you already have. They charged me about $800 outright for the ecu ( I kept my ecu for a spare ) The vehicle now goes like the proverbial. and returns 15 L/ 100 k towing a 3ton van at about 85 to 90 kph.:D
hope this helps Dave

Excellent. Tell me more - is it a fixed unit, or one of those you can "play with"?

yep, get the ECU flashed its a one shot deal you get one setting and you run with that.
broadly, anything that makes the ecu believe something different from whats happening in the real world is a bad thing.
contact Tombie2 for the work.

Thanks - I would contact Tombie if I could. He has not responded to any of my emails over the last 2 months, so pretty much given up on him, unless he can do the prodigal son thing.

Fixed Unit. Talk to one of the remaping guys, I used Triumph Rover Spares , but there are others like TD5 alive who is a member here.
Your car should have a flasable ecu which means it can be remapped in the car if you can find some one in your district with a nanacom.

I have purchased maps from Tombie, Bell auto Services (tombie is really just a reseller of Pete's work) and Td5 inside.
I have been very happy with all of them.

I have a stage 2 TD5 Alive in my D2a and really impressed with it.
I have Jose's email somewhere, let me know if you want it.
Don't waste your time with a plugin unit, waste of time and money.

Hi Andrew. Sounds good.
Q1 - any idea of price?
Q2 - yes please if email contact handy - otherwise do I check TD5 alive in UK?

Its also a good idea to fit an EGT gauge when you remap. Its very easy to send the manifold temp soaring with a careless right foot. I drive on the EGT gauge when towing.

Thanks for all the feedback/answers - that's what makes this a truely great site.
I'm going with the recommendations and getting my remap from TD5inside (from Portugal) using their AULRO special @ AUD340 in conjunction with using my nanocom.
They also recommend
(i) ERG blockoff
(ii) larger intercooler (even for an 04 D2a? - I thought they already had a bigger intercooler)
Any suggestions for the best places to get what I need - starting with WA, then other states, then only if necessary overseas?
Cheers

Hi Gavin.
As you have a flashable ECU, you might want to give Mark a call at Bayswater 4x4 (actually in Malaga - hmm) to see if his price is competitive.
Mark's good with diagnostics and fixed mine after my recent self-inflicted ECU troubles up north. A good thing about a local "flasher" is that you can test drive the goods before you decide. I've been in a Disco that he flashed and it was seriously evil, pulling strongly from stop.
Other bits like silicon hoses, EGR blanking plates etc are sold everywhere so prices are higly competitive.
Another thing... TD5 Alive provide K&N style filters with their upgrades and I bought one of these. But I've since been advised to keep using a paper air filter when out of the city. There's heaps of comment by mechanics on LR forums, too, who say the paper ones block sand better and prevent valve and bore damage.
Don't get me wrong, I found the guys at TD5 Alive to be really helpful but as I have a pre-NNN ECU, eventually I did the same as Dave and now have heaps more power and pulling grunt. Wish I'd done it years ago.
Whatever you choose, have fun with your reincarnated beast!

Hi again Gavin.
re parts: try Flat Dog, LR Centre, and all the usual supects.
re: sports intercooler - I was about to buy one when TRS told me that in a dyno test using the same ECU, a sports intercooler had given just 3KW more power than a standard post 2004 unit like yours.
If my experience is anything to go by you will be mighty impressed with the extra power of an upgrade without a sports intercooler but, as your ECU is flashable, you can always fit one later if you and your wallet agree.

Assuming it would be politic to remove the exhaust manifold to insert an EGT sender (if only to ensure no scarf gets left in there), as part of the TD5 remap for my D2a, and apart from the ERG blankoff which I will do, is there anything else it would be sensible and/or logical to do whilst delving around in that area eg exhaust mainifold studs maybe? I hate having to re-undo stuff if I can avoid it.
I'll pass on the larger intercooler for the moment, but any other suggestions welcomed.
Not specifically related, but I will be having the auto trans serviced and enhanced cooling fitted.
Cheers Gavin

Don't need to remove the manifold to do it.
I bolting the turbo and move it to one side. Place a wad of cloth or paper towel deep down inside the collector behind where you drill the port for the thermocouple.
You will need a cobalt drill bit and tap, both of which I have, and drill slowly and straight.
The swarf will mostly fall outside but the push thru will drop a small amount inside which the wad is there to stop.
Once drilled and tapped, vacuum out all the swarf then pull out the wad and bolt everything back together.
Best gauges will cost a bit more and a stepper driven gauge is best for the response time. don't cheap out on one, it's really not worth it.
I will email you a link for the Prosport gauges I got.

Gavin I think you are making the right decision regards the intercooler. the D2a intercooler is 30% biger than standard. and after driving it with the remap you will be amazed at the lift in power. As Dan said you can always do it later if you wish but I doubt you will feel that you need it.

Justin C chipped our Td5 a few weeks back and it's awesome.
It's a BAS chip and he installed a EGR blank off kit and 10mm studs at each end of the intake manifold.
The vehicle has 82000 Kms and it is now amazing with the new found grunt!
Hills, no problem.
Towing, no problem.
Overtaking, no problem.
Overtaking, whilst towing uphill...no problem!
Fuel consumption has dropped 0.75lt per 100 and I am sure once I settle down this will get even better. I am also considering getting a 1.2 transfer case gear set from Ashcroft as recomended by JC. 290 pounds from the UK. To make use of the extra power and use even less fuel again.

From personal experience,
I use a DTUK power chip, the type that plugs into the harness(in for about 2 years now). I also know directly of a fellow that has had a similar type power chip(different brand) that plugs into the harness of his TD5 Defender, which has been installed for a lot more years than what I have had mine for. Both vehicles have had no issues ( that is, the motors have not needed to be replaced or reconditioned)and they have not fallen out of the car either. :p
I have found that the only people that bag these 'plug in' power chips are:
1) People trying to sell you another product or send you to a mate who sells another product.
2) Powerchip sellers bagging other powerchip sellers in the hope that you will purchase their product instead.
I can speak highly of the DTUK power chip. Combine that with an EGT guage and sender from Auber instruments in the USA and you have reasonably cheap power upgrade and engine monitoring thrown in.
Cheers,
Jason

I fail to see how a second rate option that costs two to three times as much as a proper ECU remap and gives at best a 10% increase is a 'relatively cheap' option. But then chip manufacturers know all about fuel injection too don't they as much as all those who buy the chips...

Hello LMR,
I had my DTUK plug in chip delivered to my doorstep within 10 days of purchase for(it was a while ago) about $550, plus about another $100 for the Auber instrumnets EGT and sensor.
I dont understand the 2 to 3 times the cost you speak of....shop around a bit and you get some good deals.
They are adustable over 7 or 8 settings, from economy up to power...An upgraded ECU has absolutely no adjustment. I takes about 5 mins to make a power setting change(that incudes lifting and closing the bonnet) It can be adjusted for driving around town(economy) or towing(power).I have the EGT set with an audible alarm for easy monitoring.
I say the DTUK plug in chip is good. I've done 85,000Km on the chip now(222,000Km total for the vehicle) and my TD5 has not died or fallen out of the vehicle :D
10 % ??....Dreamin, definitely more (no ISO standards involved).
Cheers,
Jason

There are a few posts warning about EGT after chipping. I stumbled across this product out of South Africa called EMS2. An electronic unit that monitors water temp, oil temp, EGT, coolant level, voltage, oil pressure (or boost pressure). For extra you can buy a kit with all the sensors and wiring harness. Best of all it includes a EGR blanking plate with the plate drilled to capture the probe. It works out to be about $500 for the unit and kit. Can't come close to that price if you bought sensors and gauges individually. Not to mention the dash looking like the cockpit of a 747.
It's sold in Aust through Nata
disclosure - I don't own one but plan to in the near future.
