Mickey Thompson STZ tires

Has anyone used the Mickey Thompson STZ 265/60/18 tires on a Discovery 3?

I know they come out of the Cooper factory by the Mickey Thompson's use different rubber compounds. I have had good experiences with both the FCII and ATZ tires over the past 8 years on a Prado. At one point I had a pair of Mickey Thompson's on the front and Cooper ST's on the back. The Coopers were noisy and chipped, but no issues with the Mickey Thompson's. teh FCII's currently have 60,000Km on them and are in good condition.

I have a client who has them fitted to his D4. He claims they're quieter than the originals! Nice looking tread pattern, will probably be my next buy, as I too have had a good run with Mickey Thompsons on the D3.

Have MT ATZ on 17 inch rims. they were second hand so my observations might be a bit off target. I think they are a bit soft. One good trip and I think they are now shot. They had 90 or more % tread but age may be a issue to guess at. one good- no great trip via Licola- Wonangatta and back via Mount Buller and I think they have cracked and worn to a point I will have to replace them before a trip the the cape later this year. The (ATZ) drive well and work as well as a ATZ can in the really fun stuff.
Mickey Thompson Tires - STZ (http://www.mickeythompsontires.com.au/index.php?page=STZ) look similar the the 5 rib ATZs. The 18inch General grabbers did the same trip and are still ok for my trip. It might depend where your using them as my trip(s) was over a fair amount of steep rock. I road motor bikes and like soft tires for grip so I would consider MT again myself. Like staying in a straight line on the hard stuff as well and softer tires help that:D

ARB i Caboolture Qld can get them for $410. I know of cheaper tire places around. One of their pluses are that they are slightly larger than the General AT's due to being a 265/60 instead of 255/60.

I will get prices form some other tire shops tomorrow.

After about 7,000 k's I can't fault the new Cooper AT3's 265x60x18's, so far they are doing everything really well and they are very quite for a A/T.

Might be an alternative to the STZ's.

Terry, are the AT3's much larger in diameter than standard?? If so, what do they do to the speedo??

Hi Craig,

The standard speedo settings on D3's and more then likely D4's with the standard 255x60x18's fitted is out by roughly 5 k's (from memory) if you fit 265x60x18's then your speddo will read just about 100% true.

Size shouldn't be tyre brand related as all 265x60x18's should be about the same size.

There are lots of horror storys about Coopers and I was reluctant to buy the new AT3's based on previous reports of the older model tyres, but so far I can't fault the new design AT3's.

Dare I say after reading what happened with three of Redbacks new GG A/T's failing first time out in the dirt that maybe the AT3 might even be a better all round tyre ...:wasntme:

I had the old Cooper ATR's on 2 Landcruisers covering a total of around 160K and had no problems, however I didnt do any hardcore trips on them.
They were not much chop in the mud, but what ATR is good.
