Morning all
giving my TD5 a service and have noticed oil on the bottom half of the air filter. It feels oily when rubbing a bit off with my fingers, the thing that puzzles me is thats its on the bottom of the filter and the top is clean, is this something to worry about? Also the airfilter is about 4000K;s old with 2 Weipa/Cairns trips

cheers Natt

I had that same problem on a 80 Series Turbo diesel Landcruiser, was told it was a turbo seal but I fitted an EGR blanking kit & solved the problem.

Not sure if a faulty EGR would do it on a TD5 , but its good practice to remove your EGR anyway, or is your EGR is already blanked off ??

If your filter is that dirty on the clean side what does the MAF look ilke?, might be a good idea to get some MAF cleaner as well. (CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner)

EDIT, Hang on I just reread your post, The 'TOP' of the filter is the clean side so your MAF should be good,
The bottom is the dirty side sucking air from the outside, Do you have a snorkel ? How the hell would oil be getting in the fresh air side ?? Beats me.

My 2 bob's is that you were behind a truck or a 200B for a while............sometimes you can't see the oil for the dust...

I'm having the same issue with my td5 disco.
I think the filter is being impregnated with oil from the clean side and this causes the dust and other debris stick to the filter. Mine stopped doing this some time back but has started again after I serviced the car. I overfilled the engine oil by at least 1 liter during this service and I suspect this has caused the issue due to excess oils being passed into the air intake via the engine breather. I have since removed the excess oil and restricted the breather and will monitor
