Hi all, my names Peter and im a 17 yr old long time lurker and Land rover nut.
Well what a exciting and nerve-racking Saturday!! I travelled up to Gosford to pick up my 1st ever car AND Land rover!!:D
It is a 1994 Land Rover Defender Wagon with 220 000kms on the clock, fully rebuilt 300tdi motor, Rear Maxi Drives, 31'' HT tyres;)(One day I will get some 33'' muddies :P), UHF radio, ARB Bullbar, driving lights and Warn winch, long range fuel tank, recaro seats(I think i havent taken the sheepskin covers off) new wheelbearings, timingbelt recently done, and regular oil changes. It has hardly been off road and driven far. The gearbox is tight, the engine purs and it has the typical landrover clunk(Posible A frame ball joint).
I dont think I have ever been so excited or nervous in my life, handing over $9500 is a pretty big thing for me (Now I have no money:eek:) as well as having the huge responsibilty of owning a car!!
There is one oil leak from the Vacuum pump, it looks as if it has been taken apart because it is no longer riveted but bolted. Could it be the gasket or the welsh plug?? It is leaking from the little circular part too. Help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Pete

Welcome and by the sounds of it you should not have to spend money on kitting the vehicle out but a recovery kit might be a good thing to buy.

This is a good vehicle to work on and you will get a heap of info off this site.

Welcome aboard, Pete. You have a car that will never go out of style so you can keep it for a long time.
Not only that, unlike your mates, you won't have to inch over speed humps in shopping centres nor will you need to weave to get over them! :D
Most of us here are nice (except me).

Bringing back memories for me........I was 18 when I got my first L/R.

You will have a ball, just don't ever sell it......that'll be a lifetime of regret. :D

Pete, good to meet you last night (it's not often another defender pulls up opposite your home). Like I said last night it looks a good unit you've managed to pick up, just keep the maintenance up, clean oil, fuel and air and it should go on for ever. Grab a copy of the RAVE cd (http://www.davesitshop.com/davesitshop/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=1)or let Ian know you want one ;) .
Good thing is defenders are fairly easy to work on (although you will skin a few knuckles along the way) doing work yourself makes it much easier if you have a problem in the bush, at least you know where things are.
The place for parts is Karcraft (http://www.karcraft.com.au/home.php) at Silverwater when you eventually need some. :D

Hey everyone, went for a bit of a player with another defender driver. He taught me some things like driving steep rock steps on a steepish,30m climb. Learnt how to stall stop by putting the brakes on halfway up a climb then pulling on the handbrake, poping it in reverse and starting then continuing reversing down the hill , and finally how to get out of a bog hole;)
Will post pics once I upload them off my phone

I don't have alot planned for it (lack of money) but my main priority is to fix the vacuum pump issue which is the only part leaking oil, and the a frame ball mountains(this is gonna be fun with an 130litre fuel tank blocking it more than usual.
When I get some more cash from working I will stick some 33" muddies on it(sorry purists).
That's all that is planned ATM, I have to juggle 4x4ing between school(HSC this year:eek:),mountain biking, and lots of other things, so I can't tinker too much:P

Thanks Martyn. I think I have a copy of the cd kicking around my office (from the days I owned a D1). Pete had a ball with an experienced fellow local AULROer and learnt some new skills already and also managed to get stuck in a mudpit. Yep - the winch works, but the cable needs attention as you noted. Now to keep the young blokes head near the ground.

Hey Pete,
Glad to hear that you bought a Defender as your first car, they really are an awesome vehicle!!
I'm sorry to disappoint you but your not quite the youngest Defender owner on the forum! I'm sixteen:) I bought my 1995 Defender 110 wagon a year and a bit ago for $3500 with 364000 Km's on the clock, it didn't have any accessories on it except a bullbar, I was a bit dubious at first about that many K's but after taking it for a drive decided that it was well worth the price, now a year down the track I'm very happy with it and haven't looked back once. The only thing that was majorly wrong with it was the rear diff needed rebuilding, oh and the alternator was almost shot but nothing else really noticeable.
Since then I have had the rear diff rebuilt, you should have seen the bearings that came out of it!! I suspect that someone ran it out of oil at some stage:(( I did the rear hubs when I got the car back from the mechanics so that was the whole diff re-done, I then got a new 100amp Denso alternator, silicon turbo hoses and I have just finished doing the front hubs and swivel housings as well.
I got a set of 130 rims off my older brother with just the original tires on, a bit of an improvement as 130 rims are heavy duty and they have a 20mm bigger off-set then the other ones, I am planning on getting 33's (and depending on how rich I am feeling at the time maybe a set of Mach 5 wheels to) sometime but just don't have the money at the moment for that.
My car is the fourth Defender in our family!!! My Dad has another 1995 110 wagon and my brother has a 1996 110 wagon as well as a 2000 130 tray back Ute which he uses for work, so yeah we are all LR nuts..... I love it!!
Have fun with your Defender mate, Remo.

Well firstly congrats Pete on a very good choice and secondly congrats also to Remo for the same logical decision. I'm almost at the other end of the age list (53 soon) and I just wished I'd got a Deefer when I was your age. I grew up with the Leyland brothers roaming around Oz in a Series 3? (awaiting corrections from those in the know) in the 1970's (ask your parents about them)
You've joined an elite club with a car that will do anything any other car will do only it'll be slower, wetter and hotter which means you young guys will see more, have great stories to recount in future years, you will be safer and lead longer, healthier lives. Learn to work on it yourselves so you can save yourselves in remote areas. WAVE to other Def drivers ( tis a cardinal sin not to do so) and mostly have fun. Somewhere on this site there is a thread that talks about what cool guys Defender drivers are; have a search. Great to hear you're on board.
cheers Gerald
ps I second Martyn's recommendation for Karcraft as a supplier.

Congratulation you have a fine 4x4 vehicle.
If your Defe do not have one get an engine saver it is the best add on that you can have in a Tdi300.

Yeah sorry Sue, I am a bit to cheeky for my own good!!;)
Pete, I'll have to look at getting one in the near future. Another thing I would recommend is an EGT gauge, there is a LR guy from the NT that makes and sells them for LR's, here is the link ThermoGuard Instruments (http://www.thermoguard.com.au/index.html). My Dad has got one in his Def and they really are a great product. Its essential if you are planning on tweaking the fuel pump up a bit, and the digital screen in your dash is great to look at to!!

Congrats on the defender, when I was 17 the last thing I wanted was a fender haha how things have changed.
Well in my marriage I have to beg and grovel to get the keys of my wife to drive the landy.I sold the 2 door buzz box a few weeks ago and bought a nice Falcon Futura as a second family car(we have 2 girls) thinking after all these years I would finally get the keys to the landy to drive to work FAT CHANCE.
She loves that car and drives it well and I also have the Engine saver alarm the old style that goes in the hose great device.

Congrats Pete, good choice of vehicle - same age as mine :BigThumb:
Find a good Land Rover mechanic and keep her maintenance up, if you don't know when she last had her timing belt done then make sure you get that done immediately and keep up regular changes of the timing belt every 80'000km's.
Also as mentioned get a EGT gauge and a low coolant alarm.
You look after her and she'll look after you.

EGT gauge will change your driving style once you see how hot the exhaust gas gets. She's only an alloy head so it's important to keep her EGT's down - preferably below 600 degrees (yes - degrees centigrade!)
If she goes much over that there's risk of the head warping and then you're into some serious $$$ to get her fixed up, it's not pretty.
Have fun working on her, they're relatively easy to work on so shouldn't be a problem apart from a few scraped knuckles and curses now and then

hey pete. just thought id let u know i got my defender register (for people who didn't see my earlier post i was 16 now 17 and own a defender as well) i am loving driving it off road but am having a hard time trying to keep up with my mates ss commodores on road. loving the capability of my car so far i haven't found a hill i cant get up. i got it stuck in a mud hole but thats what happens when u don't have enough momentum and you try go through the longest/hardest part and you have 35psi in your tiers still. i think i attached a photo or 2 of my ute hope u enjoy them.
