Hi. Ok, first things first, I have little or no patience for computers so no big words. Just recently I've been clicking on threads and the screen will lock up with 'windows not responding' and that stupid sand timer, I can minamise and do other stuff but not on the forum...?? If I do CTRL ALT DLT it brings up a box showing what's running, usually with the problem at the top showing 99% CPU usage?? I know the computer is an old 2002 ish Dell but it should still have enough power to run on the forum..? We are with skymesh (which I know is pretty useless) but plan to go down the Ipad or Laptop route. Help needed as I am that close to dropping it from a great height if only to vent my frustration! Have done all the turn it off, try again lark and de frag! Had to remove AVG as it was taking half an hour to 'warm up' before we could use it! Thanks.

Sitec, what operating system (presume Windows XP if from 2002) what browser are you using (Firefox? Internet Explorer? other?) and what version of Adobe Flash player do you have? (go to Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/) and get the latest version)
Do you have any anti-virus installed? Done a recent spyware scan?

You're running Windows 7 on a 10 year old machine? My computer guy puts XP Pro on all old machines for stability. Perhaps you need a heap more RAM, there's lots of faster stuff around.

Hmmm, although Win7 has minimum system specs that are not that far above XP, you need to exceed the minimum specs by quite a way to get a machine that is usable.

Hey Simon,
If you are going down Greenhill Rd in the next few days you could drop the PC into the farm and I can take a look at it for you if you like.
I have a box of old RAM from dismantled computers so maybe I can even find an extra stick to put into your motherboard (if there is a spare slot).
Cheers

There is another option to consider.
My ten year old desktop runs a lot of things about as fast as computers half its age. The difference is that I am using Linux instead of Windows.
One of the many advantages of Linux is that there are versions (distros) out there that run at satisfactory speeds on machines that would really struggle with XP.
Another advantage is that there is less need for things like virus checkers.
A huge advantage is that it is free.
Linux isn't for everyone, but it is worth considering. Is there any reason not to try it on your old Dell?

My computers are doing the same thing. I have been trying to get tothis point for over a week now to find out what was on this thread because my computers were doing the same.
One is a laptop the other a home computer. Mainly with this Forum. It is bloody frustrating. I am running XP with Microsoft office 10 on my home computer and Windows vista with Microsoft 7 on the laptop.
Is any one able to help???
Cheers, Chris

David, Rarely down that far but if passing I'll drop it in. Finally got sorted with Telstra so might have an Ipad running shortly! You about for the 2nd SA Meet and Greet next weekend? Simon.
