hey all i'm new to this website and new to owning a landy, was hoping not to have to be asking for help so soon into my experience but here we are.....i own a 01 discovery Td5 manual, it has been running fine for the 3 weeks i have owned it, that was till saturday, just been driving for 5 hours in it made a couple stops and carried on, got to where i was going turned it off then tried to start it about 15 mins later to move it and....nothing, no turning over no nothing all i can hear is an electronic relay ticking when i turn the key, after a lot of swearing an phone call to the dealer(who couldnt give a **** and who's name will be named once i sort him out) and a few swigs from a bourbon bottle it just decided to start.....so made it home, now went out just before to start it and ****EN NOTHING AGAIN does anyone have any ideas or have had this problem, oh and its definately not the battery:confused:

Have you checked the connections to the starter motor? This happened to me once in a D1 V8 and it was a loose/dirty connection.

Check if there is a fuel leak from your pressure regulator, if so it will have leaked down onto the starer motor solenoid and is a cause of the starter motor malfunctioning.

Also is your battery up to the task?

Cheers

Yep ... mine had exactly the same problem. Are you able to roll start your car? If so, then it's probably the starter motor ... you can also buy a reconditioned unit, a new one or buy a repair kit from ebay.

Here's a DIY link.

G'Day Digger.
Mate KISS.
Starter Relay (in Engine bay, swap to check)
Lucar connecter on energiser (small) wire to starter solenoid, Check cleanliness of contact and security (This stuffed me around for weeks! Chasing all kinds of complex isssues, turned out to insufficient tension in the connecter, crimped it tighter and: Voila!)
Power supply to starter as above
As stated above, Remove starter and check solenoid contacts, cheap and easy to replace, mine were shockers!

THEN start checking earths, XYZ switch (if Auto)

Hope that helps.
Dave.

thanks everyone for the info, i'm hoping it is what you all seem to be saying it is as it is currently sitting in the carport going nowhere and the wife has the ****s on majorly as we only bought it 3 weeks ago......now i am no mechanic but am good at pulling things apart and putting them back together i have put new axles under trucks, re built tip trailers, fixed orga's and well you get the picture but i have no idea where the starter motor is as i dont usually play with these sorts of things but due to my remote location i dont have a choice, so where do i locate it

It'll be under the motor, near the gear box bell housing. Put Td5 into google images and you'll get a picture from the RAVE manual (well worth getting hold of a copy of that) Don't forget to disconnnect the battery before you go taking it out/checking terminals.

After trouble starting like yours I had the battery checked at the local auto elec i.e. load tested (electronic load test) and the battery was deemed fit for the job.

not believing him I asked for a proper load test with the old school testing device and guess what, the batt failed that test.

Are you really sure its not the battery?

just a thought.

cheers.

According to this site

Buying a used car from a dealer (http://www.law4u.com.au/cgi-bin/factsheet_right.asp?article_id=234)

This warranty only applies if the car you are buying:

is less than ten years old; and
has done less than 160,000 kilometres.

hey mate thanks heaps got under the car tonight to have a look pulled the lucar off to check it and found it was loose and also filthy, pulled it off and cleaned it and put it back on and as you said VOILA bloody fixed, proceeded to pull the plunger out and check it, i've ordered a new plunger and conector points so will replace them when they get here. think the landy requires a tool kit in her

Mate, I have never bought second hand from a dealer. Last time I visited a dealers yard, they asked me to pay a 10% deposit before I took a car for a test drive, and promised they'd refund it no problems if I didn't like the car.

Obviously I declined their kind offer;). Knowing there is no warranty in a private sale sort of encourages one to look reeeeeaaaaallllly closely to find any potential problems, cause you know if you miss it, its yours to fix.
