I've been looking at a 1985 land rover county it has a 3.5 v8.
I was wondering what the fuel economy would be like and how reliable these engines are? Cheers, matt

Hi Matt,
The 4 speed is more durable than the 5 speed in the long term. Economy will be ( old language) 14 to 17 MPG.
If the engine has no "tapping" or funny noises & not blow smoke it will be good for 3-400,000 klm.
A lot of them were put on to LPG which the engines go well with.

You have to do the maths, I had a 1976 Nissan & a 1983 Toyota & both had same economy as the County V8.
If the Landie is $3-4,000 cheaper than a Yota, that buys a lot of fuel

I just checked my computer records for my '84 4-speed County. It averaged 21 litres/100km for the year or so that I owned it. That includes a lot of around town driving plus trips.

Cheers guys, the cars only done 95000 k's so I'm very interested, it's a four speed. It seems to be in really original condition and going for under $5000. Seem worth looking at?

I would say definitely worth looking at, and you might be able to haggle if you wave the Red Book pricing even though in the case of a County it bears no relationship to the real world (if I recall correctly average condition V8 County is valued about $3,500 in RB ).

DeeJay and p38arover are right on the money.

I get 20-22 litres/100km, on LPG, and the vehicle is great. Parts are reasonably priced.

Good luck.

Chris

apparantly you need to be careful if you do a bonnet anagram (see previous posts on this subject), otherwise youre good
