tow vehicle advice please

I currently own a 1997 300 tdi defender ute 5 speed with disco transfer case. I have just purchased a small Avan caravan roughly 800 kg towing weight loaded. Now i know the ute will tow it but i have a yearning to purchase a 1999 td5 5 speed wagon, i also have seen a 1997 300 tdi auto disco. Has anyone towed with both or just a auto 300 tdi, advise on pros an cons requested. Baz:angel:

I have towed with my 98 Tdi auto, we were towing a boat, unbraked so probably only about 700kgs, lets just say hills involved preparation, air-con off, full throttle (without hitting kickback), hit the hill at flat out (say 120), then kickback when it starts to slow down a lot (about 95) and just cruise up at 70 or 80, sometimes we were back to 50, but the Td5 manual is a completely different beast, you wouldn't even feel that boat. The tdi is also sloooowww off the line, even without a load, oh my turbo is wound up a bit too, it helps a bit. I would go a Td5 anyday, if you get a Td5, chip it, they are fast compared to a 300tdi but still could handle 420NM IMO.
