Hi there,
Does anyone know if there is any kind of kit to overhaul and/or service the turbos???
And if yes is able to be done by the average home mechanic?
Cheers

A turbo overhaul is certainly beyond the scope of the average home mechanic. Special equipment needed and tight tolerances will dictate that this task is best entrusted to a qualified workshop.
I had to send away mine as there wasn't any in my area.

If yours is indeed cactus, a core can be acquired from OS for a nominal sum via ebay.
I did this six months ago for a neighbours MHI TD04 on his Triton.
$420 was much cheaper than sourcing bits locally and trying to repair and you end up with a new turbo except for the housings.

I'm curious as to what specialist gear you think you need.
Last one I rebuilt I did with just a DTI, Magnetic base, small press and basic spanners.

To the best of my knowledge you will need some balancing machines, allowing the turbo to run at high speed. I don't consider these part of the weekend mechanics common stock of tools. I don't have one anyway, and probably don't know how to use one.
You are definitely not the average home mechanic, Dave, professionals like you are not allowed in this competition:cool:.

Superhux is talking about an overhaul kit, bearings and seals, where's the problem there, Regards Frank.

Sorry, didn't get that bit and thought he was out after an overhaul of the turbo itself. Mea culpa...

IF you were building the turbo from scratch I agree with you JOJO and that applies if you're replacing the center shaft or the either of the wheels.
I guess at the end of the day what you need to do the overhaul comes down to how much overhaul it needs.
Seal and bearing kit - Just the basics (if the center cassette can be removed with the wheels and shaft in place then you can pull it off with a set of feeler gauges
Complete overhaul - you should have all the gear or send it in (there are ways around this)

I was out on the cost of the cartridge for the TD04, it was $315 + $40 freight from Japan in May last year (I just checked my ebay history) but it doesn't look like he has T250 Garrett cartridges, at least ATM.
