I was looking in a magazine called Car lemons and in the landrover page it stated that the defender i have had a design fault that resulted in too much play due to the transferbox ( words to that effect). Yes mine has too much play and it will cost to fix it but i wondering if this is a common problem?

If its the same problem as the RRC which I think it is They are probably referring to the Center diff shims, only cost a couple of $ and easy to replace. Biggest cause of transmission backlash, and yes I would consider it a design fault.

Having only recently got back into Landrovers Im very impressed with my TD5 Defender, Less backlash than a 100 series cruiser !!!

Unless they are referring to the input shaft spline wear problem on the LT230 that wasn't addressed by the factory until the mid/late nineties ?

that would be with the 380, 85 county is LT85, so none of that problem.

380 appeard with the 300tdi. 200tdi had the LT77, even some early disco V8s had the LT77

But it still had an LT230 behind it.

I thought all three boxes had the same problem as the input shaft and gear are identical ?

yes and no. its one of these LR things, some have had problems and some not.

out put shaft fretting was fixed in 98 i think and was only realy a problem between 93-97
a dab of grease was all that is needed any way.

but back to the original poster, end float being a problem in a 86 county.
the point is that if a 86 is a lemon then every thing since is a lemon.
i suspect the auther is not the smart and that he meens the LT85 was not that good, 86 is the split case i think?? early 87 is one peace case again i think
