Hey, my old man's 10 Puma has stopped and gone to the Stealers on the back of a truck. It has had a starting problem getting steadily worse over time. It occasionally would not start, the temperature gauge would hit the roof when you turn on the ignition, even when cold. The starter would wind but not fire. Initially, it would go if you came back to it. A couple of days ago, we got it going with help from Roadside assistance on the phone with a "flood start".
Not this time however. Has anyone else had the same experience?

i had very similar failures......result.

coolant temp sensor failure....

If the CHT sensor fails and you have air con fitted as standard, then the electric condenser fan will run all the time as a safety precaution and gives you a good tell tale as to what is causing the problem. When the CHT fails, the ECU protocol for high coolant temp is for the fan to run continuously whether the coolant is hot or cold. The sensor used by the ECU to monitor coolant temp is the CHT sensor (cylinder head temp) which is located at the rear of the engine at the coolant manifold junction. The ECU uses this sensor to do fueling calculations, limit engine operation if engine coolant temperature becomes too high, cooling fan operation and glow plug activation time. If this sensor is faulty the ECU defaults to a stored temp of 80C and runs the condender fan continuously (Remember main coolant fan is viscous type), as it does not know the actual coolant temp as the CHT has failed which can lead to: difficult cold start, difficult hot start, engine performance compromised and temperature gauge inoperative or an inaccurate reading.

Hi Guys. Problem solved. Turns out it was a faulty connection in a relay beneath the drivers seat. Not as serious as we first thought.

Only problem I've had to date as well.

LRA Recovery wanted to talk me through checking my fuel level, the battery charge and a whole list of nonsense. THey decided over the phone that my starter motor had gone and an contracted auto electrician was coming out to look at it. He phoned me and didn't know what a Defender was. Needless to say I wasn't going to let him near my car!

I ended up calling Land Rover Assit in the UK and they asked if I was comfortable lifting the driver seat and the cover plate. 5 minute international call and I was back on the road, with a relay connection pushed back in.

I did write LRA about it and got a snotty comment back that I risk voiding my waranty by call LR UK... :eek:
