Hi all
I recently twoed a 1.4t van loaded on a 2500 round trip. Was maybe 1.8 ton loaded.
Now I have a clunk that occurres when coming to a stop in neutral. Clutch in clutch out makes no difference. But for sure coming to a stop the clunking starts at low speed and reduces in rate of clunking as the car comes to a stop.
The D90 is in the dealer today and they have reported high wear rate on shims within the Transfer case. They have reported that they will need the car for a full day in the near future to re-build the transfer case. Fairly major.
However they have yet to replicate the clunking noise I have explained. I am going today and will take it for a test drive with them. They have reported hearing a clunking noise speeeding up going through the gears. I have not heard that personally but I do get lose sounding slap and clinks as I change up through the gears on acceleration.
Has anyone else had the clunking noise as you come to a stop with gearbox in neutral? As I say the noise decreases in frequency as the car slows and its only as you slow right down say under 20-30 that you begin to hear it. Any one with similar experience please let me know.
Thankyou.

You put the gearbox in neutral before stopping, Why? what reason do you do this for, coasting to a stop in neutral is illegal, isn't it?
Try coming to a stop normally, i.e. with the gears engaged and pushing in the clutch as you stop, then put the g/box into neutral and see if it does the same thing.
I would be checking uni-joints on both tailshafts, Regards Frank.

No kidding! But you eventually have to take it out of gear at some right? it is coasting to a stop at relatively slow speed. Yes once I have washed off most speed with the gears and brakes I sometimes coast to a stop in neutral clutch in or out just out of habbit.

Yep, my 2011 90 has the same noise, if rolling to a stop. If I was in my TD5 I would suggest my handbrake wasadjusted too tight! Mine is in for a service next week where I will be putting it up as my 1st issue (after 30000 km).

well lets keep talking over it. Mine is an 010 and has 39500k's on it. Well used but not abused. I've got some more feedback on it. I will be taking it for another test drive 2moro with them.
They have ordered a shim kit for the center diff. They are calling that a re-build of the T case. Just sounds like seals and shims to me. They picked up the shim issue in the t-case from the way it changes from 1st to second! Alot of slap etc
My suspicion is that the shim issue is so bad that there may be an issue with the gears within the diff aligning when coasting and not under power. I think the shim issue will fix it but I will make sure they identify the clunking we have to them additionally.
Also the tech is talking about the back half of the drum brake needing replacement possibly due to as you say contact being made under coasting conditions. Interesting.
Keep intouch. Yagan.

Try that when going for a license and it is an immediate fail, Regards Frank.

Mine did it and it was the handbrake, drove from WA to NSW and it stopped after a nice bed in and after getting it serviced they tightened it back up again. Pat

my 2011 110 has alrady had its hand brake drum replaced at 2500km, apparently there is a batch of badly machined out of round drums???????? quality control stops at the lunch room!!!!! with the new drum goes heaps better though still alot of drive line slop, abit like a 12 year old fender with 200000km on the clock.
I will be interested if the shim kit fixes this issue bibsta.
Cheers

Hey Mal cheers, me too. I will keep all informed here. I was told about the drum brake issue by the tech. The sound mine makes I cannot possibly magine it is the drum brake issue. Mine is a gear clunking noise. My suspicion is that the shim kit install, (they are calling a transfer case rebuild) will also solve my clunking. I can imagine that in certain circumstances if the side gears of the center diff are not properly located the side gear teeth may not properly mesh with the spider gears in the carrier at the point they are supposed to engage. That does sound exactly like what is happening. I believe it happens when coats or under ultra light load becuase under these conditions each side of the diff can be subject to slighty varying speds where the output shafts are actully recieveing and giving torque at difering times etc. Its hard to explain but I think i get why it happens.
Anyway the "rebuild" will reveal all I guess if the clunking goes then we know what it was. Tech says he is ordering the drum brake backing plate anyway incase the issue is still there. Interesting stuff. Incedentialy my feeling is that it was never right. I always noted an unusual amount of slap and noise when changing gears, especially from 1,2,3, since new. So Mal that corroborates with what you are saying that yours has a similar issue at only 2500 k's. I just thought it was a landrover thing and lived with it. But now that this shim problem has been spotted by them, reportedly unusually high wear rate for the shims, it makes sense to me. So long as they can set the diff up properly this time around with correct shim job I am thinking it should last. I'd hate to think this is what the center diffs on these things do regualrly. Can anyone comment on that? How many people have had the diff center on puma vintage defenders soldier on past 250000kms without requiring attention? That is the type of service life I expect from it. I should be staright forward and be able to last as required.
The fact that general slop was something I noticed in the driveline since new is actually encouraging to me as I am hoping that once set up properly by the tech doing the rebuild...fingers crossed, it will operate fine for a proper life cycle.

Mal, its been a while since LR did the shim rebuild on the T-case and no hint of the clunking anymore. I beliegve it is the fix. For anyone interested it has resolved my issue.
Cheers
