View Full Version : How do you remove MD Axle and locker?

We have Maxi Drive rear locker and axles in 86 rangie housing. The diff has sprung major leaks at the mating surface (bolts are tight).

We have not removed the rear axles before - how do you do that and not stuff the maxi drive locker/dog clutch? Maybe someone has a maxi drive manual?

Is it possible to pull the diff enough to clean and reseal it without pulling the axles?

Any suggestions on process would be great. Thanks

Not hard. Remove the axle on the side with no actuator.

For the other side, either remove the axle completely and fish out the locking dog after removing the diff and actuator, or just slide the axle back enough to remove the diff, however you will probably need to remove the actuator to realign the actuator tongue with the dog.

The manual says to lock the diff before removing the RH axle.
AFAIR I have done that with no problems.

That allows you to R/R the RH axle, however you cannot remove the diff with the locking dog attached...

I used to fit maxi drives, been a while but

to disasemble

unlock the diff
remove both axles just enough to let the diff out, say 2" (you will fell them drop out of the carrier)
pull the diff out

to reasemble

put the diff into place
recenter & push the axles home

too easy

Thanks Phil

That is what I was told for removing the axle but was not sure if it worked for taking the diff out.

Just being cautious as not want to bugger it.

I take it the dog will not fit out the hole with the diff?

So will the suggestion below by going bush work?

Does anyone have a pic or diagram re what the dog on axle should look like before we put the diff back in so we know how to position?

Thanks Skiboy

I had wondered if this would work but was unsure where the dog clutch was and how it worked having not seen one of these out of the housing.

So basically unsure if something feel out of place how or where to put it back. As you can tell I am more fearful of buggering it when we put it back together than anything else.

Yes - what goingush said should work fine. Once you have everything refitted, just check that the locker engages properly with the wheels on the ground.

If in doubt, pull the 4 bolts that hold the actuator down and you will see the dog. It is just a sleeve on the axle.

Little bit of info here, I ended up just removing the actuator. If you pull the axle out too far you will hear the locking dog fall into the housing.

Thanks PSI250 and thanks for the link to your post and pictures - now I see how it works - plan will be:

pull axles (but only just until pop out of the diff carrier bearings),
pull the diff and
clean and seal the face,
diff back in (new lock nuts)
locate and push axles back in
test locker on stands -
if all ok then fill with oil and go wheelin'
As always thanks for the knowledge sharing all.

Thanks goingbush - this is very helpful as now understand what happening inside the maxi and can now appreciate why to remove the 'axle only' you need to engage the locker to stop the dog clutch from dropping and equality why not engaging the locker and only partly removing the axel is needed for removing the diff (dog would stop diff removal).
Very helpful indeed.
