Hi All

Finally got the new 2.2ltr Deefer last Tuesday. Had to take it for a run on Thursday to Sydney (Father was taken to hospital) so it was a great run in for it. The car went like a dream, 11.3ltr/100k on the way down and 10.5ltr/100k on the way back on Sunday. Got to say, I just sold the Ford Ranger to upgrade to the Defender and I love it, it pulled like a freight train up all the hills in top gear and didnt even look like struggling, got roped into a boys weekend at Jandowyn 4wd park near Warrick next month, so I'll have to show all the Toymota drivers going what a real truck can do. Got a roof rack to fit yet and a winch as well when the bullbar arrives, a mate who made me a rear crossmember for Smeg (S3) is fabricating some side steps out of 65mmx5mm aluminium tube topped with checker plate and then will fit a snorkel. Lokked at the factory one but I thought it was too bulky on the body, the Safari looks a lot better IHMO.

Cheers Ian

You haven't been driving around Ormeau/Coomera area have you?.. I've spotted one just like yours a couple of times and wondered if it was someone visiting or a local with another Deefer.. :)

Looks good btw.. you'll love how well it goes on the tracks!

Ian, take it out bog stock to the 4x4 park, I reckon run the tyres at 20psi and watch your mates jaws keep hitting the ground.

you can keep muttering best 4x4xfar as you wonder past them.

I had a look at it today. Most envious. Ian's lined the rear with foam & carpet which has really lifted the interior. (Dunno why LR don't do that themselves, frankly.)
That gunmetal grey is definitely my favourite Deefer colour. Wonder what an S3 would look like in it?

They do on "XS" Spec UK Defenders. It's a lined and carpeted throughout.

Eg. As attached.

Hi Ian, must be the season for buying Defenders as I picked one up yesterday, although mine is not brand new like yours . I sure I'll have fun fixing it up. I agree with your comment about riding better than a Ranger, I had one as a work ute up untill changed jobs at the end of last year and even after the short run up the Warrego highway yesterday the one thing I noticed was how well the Defender rides :D.
And yes mate the purchase was made without the permission of the Minister of War and no I did not have to sleep in the shed with the cats.

Ihave to come and have a look at yours, I'll be down the GC in March.

Cheers Jeff

Thanks Guys
Mrs HH, If I am not in Sydney for Dad, I will be at the next meeting, or Steph wants to take it for a drive, so we might drop in if around your way :)

Newhue, We are going to Jandowyn with some mates from the Landcruiser club next month, Gunna get a Tomota recovery vehicle sticker

Sue, Coomera must be the only spot I haven't been yet.:)

Drover, Young SWMBO takes a deep breath everytime she gets in and out and says she hopes that smell never goes away.:)

Matt, I told you, go and get one and deal with the consequences later:D

Jeff; By all means, give me a call and drop in for a chat. :)

Wannabee; Hang in there Brother, I was getting extremely anxious waiting for mine as well. :)

LRO53; Mine looks betterer :)

The rear carpet came up a treat, almost looks a like factory fit. The buulbar, winch and towbar gets fitted this Wednesday and I am waiting on the higher mounting legs for the roof rack. Next weekend I'll look like pure sex on wheels:p

Cheers Ian

Hi Jim
All i used was rubber backed black carpet from Bunnings ($35.78 lineal metre)
Had a roll of 10mm sticky backed rubber I use in my job and lined the load space with the rubber and then kwik grip in a spray can to glue the carpet to the rubber. The marine carpet was now way as thick as the one I chose and I found this stuff very easy to use. I have used it before when I made a draw for the rear of the wife's 4wd and to line the boot of an old Holden I used to own.

Cheers Ian

righto, will check out Bunnings. The marine carpet looks good at BCF ($40 m 1m x 2m length), and I went to Clarke Rubber and saw they have some quite thick dense rubber for about $80/1m (x 1.5m length).

Not really a cost issue (well it is but isn't), just want to do the job well, while making sure its practical and I dont trap water and cause some future problems with removal- and sand etc building up.

When you said 10mm rubber, did you mean 10mm wide strips or a 10mm rubber, and this stuck to the entire rear load area etc, and then you cut and glued the carpet ontop.

So by using the rubber you have quietened the beast, and then the carpet has added layers and made it look sophisticated.. correct (as sophisticated as you a Defender will get..)

I am really keen to see a photo, if you are technically or effort inclined.

I wasn't going to say it that bluntly, but comments like above, and then no photos is a little bit of a tease.. and I think there is something about photos in the regulations!!! ha ha.

See how you go mate. Love to see it, but do appreciate factor.

Hi Jim
I use and sell 10mm thick black rubber (as attached) in my work (air con supplies) we use it as insulation on ductwork and sheetmetal boxes. I just measured up the back and cut it to shape, peeled off the backing paper and gently put it on. Then cut the carpet to the correct shape and used kwik grip in a pressure pack waited 10-15 mins until it went tacky and fred's ya aunty, all done. It has quietened it a bit, more or less got rid of any Defender Drone and deadend the noise from stones and the like when they get flickerered up from the tyres. Got the bullbar, winch and towbar fitted on Wednesday and fitted spotties last night, just waiting for the high roof brackets for the rack, have to fit the deep cycle this weekend and wire up the fridge, might make a storage box to sit next to the fridge slide with a hinged top lid to hold the recovery gear ( to recover others of course:cool:)
Cheers Ian
