A question about fuel economy, when the trip computer is set to average fuel economy, does your fuel economy go up when the car is at idle??

2.7l owners only please.

Baz.

Hi Baz - the fuel economy will decrease (average will go up) for all cars at idle.

The average consumption will increase faster if you have just reset the trip computer, like after filling up.

I can feel a remap coming on.:cool:

Cheers,
Rob

Ah, maybe its only the 3.0 that idles up-hill too. Some hills need low range though.

Economy seems a bit high, comparing it to the old D2 it is very high, considering the D2 had 3" oversize tyres, chipped, and all the crap on it and in it, this D4 has standard size tyres and all the gear now but when we first got it we did a couple of tanks without all the gear with similar figures.

This is going on litres used and Ks travelled, not from the trip computer.

With the camper on, 14.9l/100k.

Baz - I recently towed a 2 tonne boat from Winston Hills to Bangor and got about 14.2 l/100km (on the optomistic!) trip computer. On trips down to Kiama, I am lucky to get under 10 l/100km. These were both with road tyres on and not loaded up inside the D4.

AT/MT tyres will add another 1-2 l/100km and if stuff is on the roof racks - another 1-2.

I agree that the fuel economy of the D4 is not as good as the D3. I am thinking seriously about getting a remap kit - in the couple of months.

I was idling for 15 minutes yesterday and the average fuel consumption stayed on 12.0L/100 and did not move.

EUREKA!!! Perpetual Motion. Throw out the Hiclones.
In my experience based on a few cars, it catches up once the car starts to move again.
If you have been a fair way and it is an average , it may not use enough to go down to the next graduation.
Fuel economy at idle is by definition INFINITE.

Then Again at idle in the instantaneous fuel consumption show 99.9L/100 so I feel it is not particularly accurate.

Baz,is yours 2.7?

My D2 definitely got better fuel economy than the D4,both around town & on a run

Oh,and at idle:angel:

But it does have more go,is more quieter& comfortable,is bigger & heavier, and will probably depreciate quicker...........

Lol, 99.9 is as close to infinite as the car can show... I'd love if the remaining range dropped to 0 accordingly.

That aside, it must depend on how (and how often) its calculating the average - obviously not based on a time period, more likely some kind of 5 or 10 km rolling average? Or as someone said just overall average since resetting the trip computer.

Yeh Stuart the computer is a little odd

At a stopped idle the instantaneous fuel usage is 99.9L/100km but if you are rolling along at idle the instantaneous fuel usage is 0.0L/100km. Only when the accelerator is depressed will it move off 0.0 when moving.

That aside my average fuel usage around town is 11.8-12L/100km and about 8.5-9 on the highway

It's odd that it shows any consumption /100km when stationary. Previous VAG vehicles I've owned show litres/hour when not moving. That might be a useful readout for on the move as well if it was selectable.
