Guys. Anyone had an issue with the ignition chamber not allowing key to turn fully?

Feel like true land rover owner now. 2 months trouble free and now cannot start car due to key/barrel stuffed.

Mine occasionally is a little harder to get turning than normal.. I found if I turn the steering wheel onto full lock it generally works.. maybe that's all yours is too? (fingers crossed for you).. :)

Nope.

Today I had some difficulty getting the key out a few times.

Now it turns about 80% of the way and is blocked by something in the barrel

Thanks though

Had a problem a few months back when it was hard to extract the key... squirted some CRC down the slot... worked a treat... other trick is a bit of wax on the key (did that the other day)... yonks ago you could get a thing called 'dry lube' ... fixed any squeak... don't know if they still make it... cheers nigs

I have had a similiar problem to Sue found out the same turn the steering wheel to full lock either way usually fixed it, also have had the ignition switch not return to the run position after starting and the starter remained engaged. sprayed it with WD 40 but still have to return to the run position by hand.

Might be a lube issue (might not) if it is DON'T use wet lubes.

Get some graphite powder instead (any auto shop or hardware) - wet lubes will just attract dust/grit in the long run...

x2 - graphite powder is best - don't use wet lube

x2 Graphite powder.

NO! NO! - not in the ignition key lock anyway - (in door locks it's ok - if your motor car is so old it still has key locks in the doors - like mine do)

I have seen instances where over enthusiatic application of powdered graphite caused shorts in the ingition switch (blown fuses etc); a minimal amount of WD40 is OK (put it on the key prior to insertion - don't spray it into the lock).

If the subject switch is a similar design to the D1 the tumblers can burr and jam the barrel - there are threads on this site about DIY fixes and locksmiths don't usually overcharge for doing it either.

Jeez - how much graphite did they put it?

The only ignition locks I've seen have the switch compartment isolated from the barrel chamber.

I always put the graphite on the key.

Common Puma issue, BOTH barrell and switch need replacing, as a unit. I did one at 70K last week and it had already been 'repaired' under warranty. They aren't exxy and I got a locksmith to code the old key to it so all is back to normal.

Sorry to go off on a tangent........ I am having an issue where the the key is sticking when turned to ignition and I physically have to turn it back to the I position, really annoying when the force needed to retrieve it from the II position to I turns the motor off and I have to start again. Any easy fixes? gonna have it checked on my next service (2000kms away). But as it is intermittent I am sure it will not happen when the stealers are looking. I am rolling a MY10 90.:

Just get them to fit a new barrel and switch NOW before it becomes unusable. Obviously they'll have to check it and all that Bla for warranty etc and IIRC there was some sort of service action for this problem, so tell them you don't want it to become a flat tray job in the next month or so when the starter stays engaged....:(

thanks JC, I'll get onto it now rather than later!

Agree with JC.

What you described is exactly what happened to me in the previous 3 days before car towed to dealer and new barrel replaced etc.

Have now heard not uncommon.

Just some praise for Land Rover Australia here.

While the car was in dealership , they didn't have a loan car so kids by taxi to school etc. LR organized a rental car and I had great service from them.

The dealership is brand new and are not really set up yet- the guys on the help line called regularly with timelines etc.

You don't expect a car with 5500k to be in the shop, but felt like it was induction into becoming a true defender owner.

When I picked up the car this arvo I was almost as excited as when I first picker her up. And I can tell you; a commodore feels a lot warmer than a defender when parked in the sun. After driving a defender for 2 months driving a car with a 45 deg angled windscreen is weird and I love my defender!!
