View Full Version : The Art of Shaving

"Jeez these damn replacement cartridges are expensive," I thought idly, "and for such a crappy uncomfortable shave at that".
And that's where it began.
I mentioned this to a mate who has got me interested in the traditional safety razor (razor blades are pretty cheap too so ongoing costs are low).
It's not just about having a nice razor though, it's really all about ritual.
In our excessively busy modern world everyone is in a rush and shaving has become something we are conditioned to think must be done quickly. Thus the proliferation of disposable multi blade shavers and electric shavers of various kinds.
But take a step back and assess your life. Can you REALLY not spare those extra 10 minutes for a decent enjoyable shave? If you say no then I call "bullpoo" and urge you to get over yourself.
I've been frequenting the "badger and blade" forum and I can tell you that it's more than just shaving - it could easily become and obsession and a start of a collection of razors.
Where was I? Oh yes, ritual.
Anyway - getting back to me personally I bit the bullet and bought some gear.
After initially spending a good few hours trolling Amazon for the things I wanted and filling my cart, when I went to check out it said most of the items they won't ship to Australia ! I'm getting sick of that attitude!
Anyway I then went to theshaveshed.com.au and found their website loaded with good products, at reasonable prices (indeed good prices, for an Australian based business) and the site is very user friendly.
I've bought
1 x Chrome Brush and Razor Stand
1 x Proraso Shaving Cream: Eucalyptus & Menthol 150mL Tube
1 x Frank Shaving Pure Badger Shaving Brush
1 x Merkur HD Heavy Duty 34C
1 x Proraso Pre & Post Shaving Cream: Eucalyptus & Menthol 100mL
1 x 55 blade Sampler Pack
1 x Col. Conk Styptic Pencil
with postage comes to a tick under $160 which was not too far off the overseas prices in any event.
I am sure you can get just as good of a shave with other or cheaper products but for me there's that element of ritual involved and I know I'm going to enjoy this kit.
Experimenting with razor blades as to which one is best.. a bit like reloading for rifles !
Also the ones I don;t want from the sample packs I can probably sell to desperate emos !
So.... are you a safety razor user. or even a straight razor (aka cut throat)?
If not, go away this thread is not for you ! These droids are none of your concern.
If so, do share.

Got an old brass safety razor that I use. Blades are damn expensive though.
Reminds me, I need more shaving soap.

UHUH!
Not shaved for umptyleven years.
Still remember the aroma of dear old Dad's Faulding shave cream with lemon Balm though. Still got one of his old cut throats somewhere around too.
Grew my beard in the 70's in the Navy, never stand that close to me with a sharp thing in my hand any more.
Have fun with the morning ritual though.

Whatcha doing with the cut throat ? sentimental value?
It's just that management at work needs a little thinning out and...
No actually I just wanted to give one a go one day and would like to get one for myself in due course.

I applaud your initiative! For the esoteric, there is sensory delight of cold steel against the skin efficiently removing the stubble with minimum drag ... It can also be a time of philosophical reflection...
Industrious blokes use shaving time to advantage... I recall one of my mates used tape summaries of his lecture notes to the side of the mirror around exam time... Another with a quite reasonable tenor voice used to...well....practice :(
I do remember ending up with a face akin to well used small arms target when first shaving with a "safety" razor.
As a 19yr old I used shave my grandad (he was very ill) with a 'cut throat' (he'd refuse anything else) honed on a leather strap... rarely would there be more than the occasional need to apply the stiptic...but trying it on my own face was a disaster...
These days I prefer the cheap three blade disposables ...I find the secret is to get a good lather with a brush and use only tepid water to rinse the blade... I don't sing or study for exams...

No Ron I haven't seen that pic - it's a ripper.
I'd like a Jno Baker razor (an Australian straight razor) one day - they are no longer made though the firm still exists) . Keep your eyes peeled in antique shops people and let me know if you find one in decent nick.

I've been using Proraso soap for years, use it with an English pure badger brush with ivory handle. Bought a straight edge with a replaceable blade which are about $15- at the shaver shop and use the thin safety blades which you snap inhalf.
There's a $8- barber in Parramatta who will actually do shaves as well. Treat myself once a month to have it done. $20- for a haircut and shave and 40min without the outside world.

Intersting,,
I shave my head as well, and I use a 4 blade throw away (fusion jobbie) which does an awesome job. I know this, cause i get told its smoother than the preverbial,, and their jelous,,lol. ;)
I first learnt to use the "safety" razor when dad taught me all those years ago, but I found it quite difficult to get it right, even on youthful hair. However, one thing I did learn, was to use a proper "cream" as opposed to a foam. Thus I use the Palmolive Lather Shave cream which has to be brushed up to a lather with warm water. If I dont use this type of cream, I find two things happen,,, a) the shave can hurt, and its not as "close", and b) the blades on whatever razor I use,, seem to stay sharper longer,, which in turn saves money. Mind you, I do the three day groth thing too,,, (ok, sometimes thats weeks,,,)
When dad was in his last weeks at home, he asked me to shave him several times. As hard as it was, I did it the first time with his safety razor, then after that used my own. He commented on how much better the new twin blade (at the time) was over his own. And now they have 4+,,
I have never had a shave with a cut throat, but certainly would lover to try,, I'd hate to slip but,,,

when I was living up north ( this one was many moons ago) I used a bone handled cut throat razor and sharpened it on a beaut leather strop that came with it. I had a small roll with everything in it, the razor had come in a wooden box that had two in it originally but only one when I got it. It was a sheffield made one with celebration or something like that on the blade.. and was hollow honed or similar also written on blade (Im not sure if that hlps work out what type etc) anyway i worked up a nice lather in an old pannican/enamel cup I had in the kit and shaved away, It was great once I got used to it...
Then, one day, when I was ill...(I wasnt hung over its just pure coincidence I had a big night on the beer, bundy and port the night prior  ) I got out of the swag, set up my strop off the mirror as I always did camping and in a daze sharpened the razor.
It felt a bit more stingy than usual I thought on the first pass but I convinced myself I was being a wuss... after the second pass I looked in the mirror to see two bright red lines of blood running/streaming down my face!!
MMM 250k from nearest station let alone medical help! after the clean up it wasnt too bad just it had bled freely esp due to the length of the cuts (man what an idiot!)
Turns out that , probably due to my "illness" you understand, I'd gone too far up the strop when honing the razor and hit the metal stud, this put a tiny chip in the blade and .. well that was the last time I shaved with a cut throat razor... on the bright side it healed fairly quickly and without scars (with a head like mine thats not really that important!) and it was another week and a half before we were due back in from our patrol so all was good. I left the razor and strop hanging from a desert oak (well I think it was) set up as though someone was about to shave (pannikin and brush there too!) I wonder if its still there...only got rid of the box to a mate who has a cut throat about 5 years ago.
About 6 months after that I stopped shaving at all (except to trim back to the allowed George V beard ) in fact my wife (the Minister for War and Finance) ;) hasnt seen me without my beard or mo... (its probably better that way!)
But I did enjoy the couple of years with that cut throat and strop, it was handy and gave a great shave..always felt so clean and fresh even in the middle of the desert..a great start to the day
enjoy..

I tried a cut throat for a few months but I found that the right side of my face got a much better shave than the left, I never quite mastered it. Then I went back to the modern razor. Perhaps it is time for a revisit.

I havent been to barber since before I went into the Nasho's in 59.
I always cut my own, buggered if I am going to pay 2 and 6 for a hair
cut. Nowadays since my eyesight started to get a bit blurred I use an electric shaver. I just run it all over the head every couple of weeks.
In this climate, bald is best.
On the face , I have a mo and a goaty type thingy hanging off my chin.
I use a disposable bic on the rest of the face and neck.
I dont bother using cream or water or stuff, I just shave it dry before I get into the shower.
I only shave those bits when it is time to go somewhere in the Disco, untill then I couldn't care less about looking in a mirror.
Cheers.
Robert.

I was just perusing my work load this weekend (a Sydney based Parade is on), needing a break, I opened AULRO and saw this thread.
I was once told the most popular (prep work) involved on Oxford Street this time of year was called the SBC, I'd hate to use a cut throat for that.
clubagreenie
2nd March 2012, 12:01 PM
I always thought it was BSC, and a SBC was an engine.
Waxing in that area is the way to go though. Can recommend a place in North Sydney full of pretties that'll do it for you.
In terms of tha face though, the biggest advantage of using a pot of soap is the cost. $15- for a pot that lasts a year vs a can at at least $5- that lasts a month if you're lucky.

http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/The%20NEW/1930s%20NEW%20Canada.JPG
Known as a great shaver, this model was typically provided for free with the purchase of a related product such as Palmolive Shave Soap or Colgate Shave Stick.
I'll definitely be using this one when I clean it up. With the open comb it will be the razor of choice if and when I decide the beard must go.

clubagreenie - you actually have to try pretty hard to cut yourself. Its not as hard to shave this way as many people seem to think...
Anyway I had a shave with the Gillette after cleaning it up a bit.
Definitely nowhere as nice as my Merkur, but could well be that I need more practice.
Definitely need to hold it at a different angle compared to the Merkur.
I can see that the long comb on the Gillette should make it a good choice when the beard eventually comes off.

Just bought some new Feather brand blades (the only ones still made to suit autostrop valet razors) - the blades were cheap enough USD$4.50 for 5 blades but $13.50 for shipping hurt.
Oh well I bought 25 blades so that should last me approximately forever since I won't be using it every day.

As a young lad I always had a buzz cut on the noggin. Twice I actually went bald. First time the barber did it with a cut-throat and I could just feel the tiniest bit of stubble. Second time a mate did it with a Phillishave electric job, and it was smooth as silk.
Despite this, I always hated electric shavers for my face.

I've got a u-beaut cordless razor. Good battery life and gives a good shave. Unfortunately I have a heavy stubble and the cost of replacing blades every 2nd month is prohibitive, so it sits there all alone while I drop back to using disposable razors. I can get 2-3 days out of these and they are cheap. Jim

I'm not really interested in shaving as an art, or a passion, or anything like that. In the same manner I don't look at showering as a luxurious indulging excercise, nor brushing my teeth, combing my hair or any other morning ablution. I'd much rather spend 30secs doing the job with my Phillishave and spend the extra 10 minutes curled up in a very cosy bed. Bed, now thats good use of my time. :D

Can't disagree with that. I've had it done a few times in various countries, and it is very much a luxury to relax and pamper. I remember having it done in Vietnam, and with a hair wash, haircut, head, neck, shoulder and back massage it was something ridiculous like $3. However I did refuse the 'ear cleaning with a metal implement' service.
I wafted out of that shop on a cloud I tell you.
However, the standard daily routine is a little more perfunctory. 2 mins scraping around with a cartridge type razor whilst in the shower is all my poor old mug gets.

Was given a couple of cutthroats today, that were found in a damp corner of a shed somewhere.
Boxes were completely rotted away.
One seems to be fairly modern. Tang is stamped "Made in Germany - Swedish Alloy Steel". Blade seems to be laser etched, but too much water has gotten to it, and most of the name has been eaten away, with some nasty pitting. Looks like it might be a lost cause.
The other is tang stamped as "Bengall" and "Cadmann & Sons - Sheffield England", and has a very heavy square blade. A bit of rust to the tang, but the blade looks like it will polish up nicely.

For the last 5 years I havent used a Razor younger than me. (Gillette brought out the twin in the year I was born). My collection
I got to Badger and Blade through The Fedora Lounge (Im into hats), and went through the razor acquisition period for a few years. Ive now got more vintage double edged razors than I could wear out in three lifetimes......
My fav blades are persona red, and I get them from MensBiz in melbourne.
I didnt take to the cutthroat. Too much time and skill required for early morning shaves. I can shave as fast with the DE as i can with anything else after a few years practice....
If anyone wants to save a fortune in blades and wants to walk down this old road, I can advise. :-) Ive converted more than a dozen men to trad shaving and none of them would ever go back to the pull and scrape of the modern blades.

Ever since the first bits of face fluff started appearing as a teenager, I've always wet shaved with cartridge type razors, but never had a traditional shave with a cutthroat.
So on my 40th birthday a few weeks ago I decided to treat myself to a 40 odd minute long, hot towel shave with a cutthroat at an old fashioned barber shop.
Absolute bliss whilst it was happening, very relaxing and I thought the bloke did a really good job (mind you he was a huge tattooed Kiwi fella, so I wasn't going to argue too much whilst he had a blade at my neck :D).
But...... the little nicks and cuts slowly started to appear and my neck and face for about two days afterwards looked like I'd been attacked by a feral cat and stung and itched like crazy. He obviously didn't do such a good job after all
So, whilst it was a good birthday present to myself for all of, maybe, an hour, I think I'll stick to the cartridge things for now!

Taught myself to shave with what I believe to be a 'safety blade' razor. The smooth result has yet to be replicated by the now traditional disposable clip on razors...and that's now 28 years of trials.
For a time in my mid 20's I was regularly on the move with work, and without running water, let alone warm water, I had very early starts and I spent a few weeks of each month shaving 'dry'. Man, that hurt, and ironically could be said to 'put hair on ones chest'.
I do like the idea of returning to the safety razor, largely due the outrageous cost of disposable clip on's, and although chicks dig scars apparently, I'm yet to return for fear of resembling Norman Gunston.

I put on some vintage blues or classical. Then I generally have a shower, soak my face, put a hot wet towel on it for a few mins and then make myself a great rich lather from one of the better shave soaps and a shot of glycerine. Take a sip of whisky (to set the mood), maybe a puff on my pipe and shave away with a good, solid vintage razor from the 40s or 50s. Finish with some Proraso aftershave and Im good to go.
During the week I use a palmolive shave stick and a 1960's super slim adjustable for a perfect two pass five min shave.
If you are interested, have a look at this youtube and perhaps some of this guys other vids. Its a good place to start to learn to shave like a man.
(A thrifty man - Do you know what the markup on modern blade carts are? Ridiculous. My blades cost about 29c each and I get about two weeks out of one. )

For those wondering what we are on about....
This is a straight razor (heathens call it a cut-throat)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/07/1547.jpg
This is a DE (double edged) 'safety razor'
http://www.royalshave.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/HR_401-089-00_feather_de_razor.jpg
I prefer a DE 'open comb' razor myself...

There are also single edged razors, and many varieties of all of the above.
Sound Advice:

after all they are just silly....

DE razors are easy to use anyway....

A Gillette Slim adjustable and an "old".
How do you find the old? I find them a bit aggressive for general use, but when time permits a nice long leisurely shave they do a good job.

Yeah, it's an old German LUNA from WW1. Quite an agressive shave, so you need to take your time, else it can bite you.
The Gillette 195 Slim Adjustable is a dream. I find setting #4 to be ideal for a twice weekly shave, and the weight and balance very nice too.
If your shaves are a bit further apart, crank up the number. Or if you're shaving more often, you can wind it down a bit.

My weekday shave alternates a bit through the collection, but at the moment the slim is my daily shave. Before that I was using a fatboy. Before that.. um.... I cant remember...

I use disposable three bladers and get at least a month out of them by shaving in the shower. I shave daily and have done so since a teenager.
If you don't want to buy shaving foam there is the oil that you only need one drop of and rub it on with hot water, it does a good job.
The old local barber I used to go to for haircuts was an absolute master with a straight razor and he would always clean up the back of your neck with it! It was a job that could not be reproduced with any other razor.
Non of our local barbers will use a blade or do shaves, as I enquired recently and was told it's basically the "blood rule" thing!
There's no exscuse for any hair below the eyebrows ;)
Cheers, Mick.

Cool.
Do your blade boxes have lids? I have a couple that belong to my LUNA, but they are lidless. Blades don't fit really well in them either. They only fit diagonally, not flat.

That seems strange.. mine have lids.

Not at all:D
Can you recommend me a place in SYD?
Absolutely. Les Smooth in North Sydney. Gillian has great hands. They actually use a proprietary wax they have made for different areas too. She's developed it over the years and I've been able to tell the difference when they change.

My god Man, do you then start your business as a Private Investigator and go and questions dames or broads, all the while secreting a .45? :p
Just having a dig mate, I do agree: A good shave really is a work of art.
I have my eye on a few straight razors at the moment, but I'm saving for a rear locker so.....
Disposable razor it is for now :(

Lol... I like finding enjoyment and pleasure where i can. Doing it right, developing the right feel and putting yourself in the right frame of mind makes for a much more colourful life.
I read something about land rovers the other day, and ill have to paraphrase because I can't remember where it was, :-
"Sure, they are boxy and agricultural. They ride rough. Their internal appointment is simple and old fashioned. But I can't help but love it. Every time you climb behind the wheel it feels like an adventure".
It struck a chord with me. I like hats, single shot rifles, women with curves and cars with chrome bumpers.
Take your pleasure where you can find it I say.

I never proclaim myself to be great.
Just twisted, hilarious and more than a tad odd.
But not great
At least not in the "profound life lesson" type way, I'm usually too busy taking the **** out of things to be profound.
So I'd agree with you :D
You can come and argue with me and Sheerluck any day  :lol2:
