Though my 1998 130 lacks a few comforts and nick-nacks that would make driving more enjoyable, it does what I want it to do.
That is seating for five people, carry heavy loads while towing even heavier loads and having good fuel economy.............But what I hate is the idiot who fitted the factory Air Conditioning.
Thanks to all those who tried to help me get access to the wiper motor, that was reasonable accessable untill that idiot used pop rivets, staples and glue to secure the aircon ducting to the dash over the access to the wiper motor.
I have just about got the ducting off and could sure use some good advice as to how to fially get it all the way and then refit and seal it in a better way.

If you have a 1998 Defender & it was sold in Australia (not a private import), then it's not 'factory' A/C.

It's a local kit, supplied by AMC & normally fitted prior to sale (unless the car was not specced with A/C).

It's been ages since I removed mine (and threw it as far as possible). Are you trying to remove the housing or the whole unit? I'm not sure you'll be able to remove just the housing/ducting without taking the whole thing out. You may be able to drop the whole thing down enough to get LH corner off the dash to get access to the wiper motor - not sure.

To remove it completely you'll need to have it de-gassed by an air conditioning specialist. Depending on how much gas is in it, they may pay you for the privilege. You then undo the joins in the gas lines on the engine bay side of the passenger footwell. When I undid mine one of the nuts was corroded onto the flared end of the pipe so it twisted the end off. I think the rest of it is pretty straight forward. Remove the metal grill in the footwell at the bottom of the unit and it's all pretty self explanatory (I think - sorry, it's been a while).

Be prepared for the possibility of rust (http://www.aulro.com/app/data/500/medium/passenger_footwell_rust.jpg) around the holes in the firewall, depending on how well your vehicle has been cared for.

James.

I recently fitted a new park switch to my wiper motor without any tears. What do you want to do with the wiper motor? mines a '97 130 with the local aircon.

You are no doult right, but the unit was not fitted by the dealer I purchased it off, it was a stock item that LR Aust had had fitted with Air.
Usually we are giving the Poms a bit of stick but this a bad job done by Aussies and obviously sanctioned by LR Aust.

Hi Don,
Wipers will no park at the bottom and work all the time on intermittant.
Have purchased a new ECU wiper delay unit (located behind the fuse bracket infront of the gear stick) The wipers work normal on slow and fast speed, with or with out the the ECU unit fitted. When the new unit is fitted and wipers set on intermittant they try to work going about a half swipe and stopping with a lot of protest noise coming out of the ECU unit.
I was told there was a park unit attached to the wiper motor so have done a major job of removing the ducting for the air con to find nothing that looks like a relay or ECU unit!!??
Any advise would be appreciated.
Regards Peter

I have seen a truck with the fuse pannel moved and the ac unit fitted on the bulkhead directly infront of the gear stick. There is no ducting. Think about this, in a truck cab what difference will the little ducts in the stupid dash lay out make.....none. Now if there is no rear seat ducting in the 130 DC I would be tempted to do the same. Cold air is goint to circulate through out. It will have a bigger challange fighting the gaps and holes in the body work than no ducting....

here's a 'how to' for the whole box and dice.

Wiper boxes and cable renewal - Land Rover Zone (http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f41/wiper-boxes-cable-renewal-99743.html)

You can use the bit about the left hand end to get at the motor. Don't pull out any staples, unscrew the mounting rail above the line of staples. You may have to drill out the rivets as I have done. I've replaced mine with 1/4" hex drive tek screws. Just let the aircon slump away a bit and you'll get enough access. The park switch prys off the wiper motor body and the new one slides on. Study the new one to see how to pry off the old one. The park switch looks like this:
520160 - PARK SWITCH - LR Spare Parts - All Land Rover and Range Rover makes (http://www.lrspareparts.com/eshop/park-switch.html)

Many thanks Don your discription was perfect and exactly the whole box and dice.
For any one else looking to replace the park switch on defenders, all LR spare parts people I have spoke to say that the part is not available and you have to purchase the whole wiper motor. But in actual fact part No 520160 for the 2002 model is the same and can be purchased through Graeme Cooper for about $25.

Actually, I got my park switch from DLS in the UK. same pt# and about $10 plus freight, but with several other things, so the freight wouldn't have come to much.
