Oils ain't oils

Here I was happily doing my own engine oil changes on my 2006 2.7 TDV6 D3. Even bought an oil extraction pump to make the job real easy.

Every 6,000 Ks for the last couple of years I have sucked out the old Castrol Edge Sport, fitted a new filter and dropped in the fresh oil.

Today I find that Castrol Edge is now New? well to me that is because I had a fair supply of the old Edge Sport and now it appears I cannot buy the Edge Sport, it is replaced with New Edge titanium. Funny though Edge Sport still appears on the Castrol Lubeguide Website.

Now I could be wrong and correct me if I am, but the New appears to be a lower spec oil. So off I went to my local Rover dealer to find out what they are using. It turns out that they are using 5 - 30 Magnetec? again isn't this a lower spec oil and price wise how can dealers justify what they are charging if using Magnetec. (one of the reasons I change my own engine oil)

Can anyone shed some light on this as to what is going on here?

What do other people who change their own oil use or recommend? as I would prefer to continue with an oil equal or better than the recommended Edge Sport I have used in the past.

I am not of much help but I have found contradictory advice on oils. One land rover servicing shop has advised me to use 0W-40W synthetic oil whereas another says to use 5W-30W Magnetec (the D4 manual indicates 5W-30W meeting WSS M2C934 B or ACEA:C2) .

May be others can shed some light?

Now I'm even more confused as it seems that castrol make a range of "professional " oils that aren't available retail.

But if you look at the Castrol site,you will notice there are two spec oils for D3 tdv6,depending what yr it is,something to do with DPF,and also D4 2.7 also uses a different spec oil than D3 2.7.

The LR manual that came with my D4,gives one spec oil for diesels 5w-30,spec WSS-M2C934-B what ever that is?So is this for both 3l & 2.7?

On digging deeper into the Castrol website I also have found reference to the range of professional labeled oils which as you state do not seem to be easily available. In particular the Magnatec group.

My inquiry with the dealer and his reference to the oil they used was Castrol Magnatec 5w-30 as I wrote it down. Not 5w-40 so like you I am also more confused as to which oil to use.

Are we looking at a cheaper with a large margin do it your self line of oil for the chain auto store branches and bulk supply for the industry or what is happening here?

Scarry To my knowledge none of the diesel D3s that came to Aus were fitted with DPF so at least that could help in some part with a oil choice
