Hey everyone!
My front right wheel has a fair amount of play, and as I was due to drive Townsville to Brisbane Friday just gone I thought I'd get my mechanic to re-pack or replace all four for me! Got the call back saying that they are the "hub-type" and can't be re-packed (fair enough), he also mentioned that rover in Brisbane wanted $935 to send just one to Townsville! I think he may have been given a quote for the actual hub rather than bearings...
Is it possible to simply replace the bearings or is it a complete new hub that's required? I have no bearing noise, it was simply a part of my pre-trip inspection!
In the end I didn't risk driving it, we drove the 3500km weekend on my partner's Suzuki jimny (I now have a sore back, legs, ass and RSI of the wrist)!!
Cheers

Wheel hub bearings can be purchased separately. You'll need to have the old ones pressed out of the hubs though. And it'll be a whole lot cheaper changing just the bearings compared to swapping complete hub assemblies.

See Lori Sickley's page Land Rover - Range Rover (http://www.simplerthyme.com/pics/LR/RR/) (I think Lori was the first to write this up):
P38A front wheel hub from 1995 Range Rover 4.0 (http://www.simplerthyme.com/pics/LR/RR/bearings2/index.html) - run your cursor over the pics. Click on pics to enlarge them.

EDIT 9 June 2020: Lori's page seems to have gone but it's still on the Wayback machine: P38A front wheel hub from 1995 Range Rover 4.0 (https://web.archive.org/web/20130528124837/http://www.simplerthyme.com:80/pics/LR/RR/bearings2/index.html)

Sounds quite the job to me! I can get brand new hubs cheap enough, might go that way!

If you are looking for a cheapish way out I would get a second hand hub from the UK. Would cost a bit to post but not much to buy. Because of the weight it might be cheaper to get one from a breakers yard in Oz if you could find one.
Easy to change the hub but get the hub not loosened before you start.
I took my car to a Truck tyre place and they loosened it and re-torqued it after. It Was stupidly tight.
I did a write up with pics on changing the CVJ which involves removing the hub

Try Andrew E on this forum (Son of Bundalene in eVilBay). I bought a pair of rear axles from him - he wrecks P38As. Now I have them, I should never need them. :D

The bearings are notoriously difficult at times to get out of the hub, at least a 20T press is required.
