View Full Version : How to talk you wife into buying a 90?

Anyone had much success with getting two defenders into the drive way?

Currently have a 110, and trying to upside the missus to go for a 90. She is aiming for small sub style: Mitsubishi ASX, Subi forester etc.

When I see these MY12 for 39k I just can't help but think,"c'mon! Let's get serious!"
Not as economical, and probably not a great idea but what methods should I employ to influence purchase? Tips welcomed.

I've been down that path, it does not cut the mustard.
I used the 'need it for work' line for the 110  , I just can't use the tax deduction thing on a 2nd 'company car' esp since I'm the only employee.

If anyone can find a valid reason please let us know !!!

easy, just tell her its a 110 with 20% off.

haha wasn't there a thread a few days ago talking about someones missus wanting a 90 and the guy wasn't sure what to do...

would she be wooed by the 90's cute size and character (while still looking tough of course) :D

Benz,
Must have missed the thread. Where does she live?!!

Fellas, I have tried:

1. hold its value more than other cars you're considering..
ans: not really financial decision anyway

2. Chicks in '90's look incredibly sexy!
"I dont care!"

3. Crumple zone comment will come tomorrow

starting tomorrow she is taking the 110 to work. Hoping for positive experience. Have tidied it up inside, put a nice cd in, I havent really let her drive it that much so hopefully a few days alone with the Defender will start a love affair.

I think she likes the wave thing, so if you see a black 110 in MAckay, give her a wave and tell her the Defender looks good, but 90 would be more suitable!

We've got a 110 and a Sport. The Defender was in having a service done today(found more leaks), when hubby rings me to say that there's a yellow 90 there for sale, and wouldn't it look good in the driveway. Now I'm a converted Land Rover tragic, but even I had to draw the line at that (for now):p

They are very sexy cars. Maybe you could sweeten the deal by giving her something else that she wants to go with it. Just a thought

Maybe if I threw in a wedding ring... probably not the best motivation for marriage. We do have the kids, the mortgage already though... and jeesz, a 90 & 110 in the drive.. How good would that be! So when one is at the dealers getting fixed I could still drive a defender! beauty!

If she is in any way similar to Mrs Spud you have zero chance of getting her into a 90. We had a 90 and a 110 for two or three years and she only ever drove the 90 ONCE - and that was because her car was 'parked in' and she needed to go in a hurry. Heard about it for a week afterwards :(

Good luck though - it you don't try, you'll never get!

I'm a girl and I wouldn't have anything else but a 90 now I have one.. when my hubby first told me to have a look at it (at a show) I was originally aghast.. but I went back for a second look.. and by the third look I was in love.. Poor hubby then realised he had to spring for a new car.. :)

The car has so many good points that I barely know where to start.. apart from it's off road capabilities (which appeal to me but maybe not to all other ladies) it gets her up good and high so she can see past the cars in traffic, it's reasonably economical, it looks good (damn good), strangers wave and stop you in the street (I was even accosted by a motor cycle driver at the lights yesterday asking about the car) to admire the car, it's a lot safer (stronger) than what she is looking, there is plenty of room in the back for shopping, it drives well, parks easily (once you get used to the turning circle lol), it will hold it's value a lot better than the other cars you mentioned (more so I think as the shape is changing) and well it's just cool... as I said I wasn't sure when I first saw it but I am so glad that she is mine now! :)

Some proper nouns INCISOR, so I can understand your advice?!?

What are you suggesting I'm beging for forgiveness, for? and begging for?
And what do I need to man up to do?- I would love to follow your advice for *&^%s sake but just not clear on what I should man up to do?

Mate I hope you're texting/forum on a phone or have drunk half a slab. Incomprehensible.:)

Benz,
Great, another tactic!

Find movies with 90's, like one suggested in the thread you referred me - rent them, watch a few each week.. then slowly through osmosis things might occur?

Thanks

Tell her you can (or need to) buy two 90's for $75K and she'll say "can't you just buy one?" and you say "S'pose so, but it'll cost $39k" and she'll say "Yeah, but we've saved $36K!" Problem solved :)

My better half has been quoting me the NCAP rating and all sorts of things. I tried to explain that I don't intend to crash it in the first place.

Mate I admire your devotion. I have my wife over the line, just not the 40K.
I'd work on the simple things like power steering, air con, ABS, colour, and better visibility. Just keep it simple so the Defer can do what all the others have, and be just a bit better. As Sue mentioned she will warm to it if it's going to happen.

You may have to work on an up spec flash model like Sue's, (sorry can't recall ATM) so be prepared to compromise if you have to have a 90 in the drive.
But maybe mention she will be cooler, funckier, and stand out from a Prado or LC mum, but be careful about comparing size as she will go straight to comparing Jap small cars again.
Perhaps try air bags are expansive things that break and require fixing to stay legally registered. Defenders don't need them because of the strong chassis.
Japanese servicing is expensive, and they rarely accept responsibility for their product.
Leaks are a thing of the past, Land Rover have fixed that problem. Just don't mention it takes 5 attempts to achieve this.

GOOD LUCK

You must have been to Dungog if that's the one I was thinking about. I think it is $18K (not sure of price) but has over 400,000km on the clock

I bought a new 110 3 weeks ago to replace my wife's Volvo XC90 and was going to get a zippy car for my daily drive but loved her car so much that I went a bought a 90 this week. Must say I love driving it but my wife now wants it! :D

No.. no one ever does mean to crash their car.. but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen - whether through your fault or some other moron on the road.. :)

My other half absolutely loves our 90 and uses it as her daily drive.

We were forced into her driving my 300Tdi 90 back in the UK when the GFC forced me to work further and further away from home. She worked 3 miles from home and I had to suck my pride and drive the Suzuki Swift Sport...

She very quickly worked out that in town Defenders own the road - no one pushes in front of you and if you join a slip junction at 80 km/h they always make space for you! She's only 5'2" and the 90's driving position allows you to "command" the road...

My other half refuses to drive my 90, she has never even tried. She loves riding in it with the roof off but no deal when it comes to getting behind the wheel. I think it is a combination of the loud motor, very long gear stick with reverse top left (need long arms or a good lean!) and, when i first got it, a 'vague' steering box (now replaced but you could turn the wheel 20deg before anything happended!)

The fact it has failed to get me home on a couple of occasions probably doesnt help either(aftermarket immobiliser and ECU playing up).

I have managed to get her to agree to drive it on the beach next time we are over at straddie, hopefully then she will realise it isnt as scary as she thinks!

Daughter bought a 90 2 weeks ago, so here's me pineing for one. Missus replies "I knew this would happen, and the answer is NO!"

Damn! methinks, how to change her mind. She who must be obeyed is happy driving the Calais, when I mention a 90 she brings up the past when we had a SIII - max speed 80KPH, east-west travels etc, nope she is happy ensconced in wrap around leather, V8, cruise-control etc.

I am sooking in the shed thinking about a possible 101 project vehicle. That'll teach her. :D

p38arover- yep, that's the one.

With all the work my hubby wants to have done to the trucks, he may as well buy a holiday house in Dungog ;)

I must admit though, I get pretty excited every time something new gets bolted onto one of them too. It means more fun and (mis)adventure

We have a 110 and the other half bought a new ninety as her company car. I asked her advice on your question and her response was "Just tell her it's a man magnet" :o. I think it also helps that she also has the option of driving her Renault megane sport cup that goes like a rocket

Sadly I think I prefer driving the old tdi 110.

Yeah I have

Although my wife's tells everyone they are both hers
I have a company car but the 110 is the family car which she drives all the time and the 90 was her car in the uk. So see classes both if them as hers

Your lucky! My mrs keeps going on about getting a 90 rather than anything else as a 2nd car.

We've had 90's & 110s for years, now she wants her own.

Progress being made.

Took her out for dinner armed with forum chatter. We have progressed from 'No! Are you kidding?' to mom I am not sure we can afford it.

Oh yes it will be ours!!! I just hope the price doesn't go back to 52 k$ before I get organised.

Back up to $52k???

Is $40k a sale / offer price? if so do we know how long it will last?

We're thinking about another 90 at the moment... At $52k we won't be!

My understanding.

1. When we bought the 110 last year I am pretty confident the 90 price was $52k. I remember because I was so surprised.

2. At the dealer and he reckons it is a sale but I think it is new pricing with aussie $, and new model? Am sure plenty of people know more about defender pricing than me on here.

I thought the price was $39,990 or there abouts, plus on-road and dealer delivery costs. And the offer relates to orders placed and delivered before 31 March. The offer relates to MY2012 vehicles if the Land Rover Australia add is anything to go by as they say the engine size of the Defender is 2.2 litres (see New 4x4 & 4WD Vehicles - Best SUV Prices - One Day is Now | Land Rover Australia (http://www.landrover.com/au/en/lr/offers-and-promotions/one-day-is-now/)).

I understand that there are some still available at the $39,990 drive away, including MY12 2.2 ltr models. I'm still trying to convince my better half that she definitely needs a new 90 & to further that effort went to huge expense to replace her UHB thumb drive with the following:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/03/1276.jpg

She likes that so there is hope!
