View Full Version : Upgrade D3 to D4.... nav concerns

Hi

I have had my D3 HSE for about a year and have been extremely happy with it. However I would like to start adding some extras, and therefore have also considered upgrading to the D4 (second hand) before i do.

But at the moment I have concerns over the sat nat.

On my D3, based on info from this forum and disco3.co.uk i fitted an aftermarket Kenwood/Garmin unit where the screen fitted neatly into the cubby hole in the top of the dash. This is fully integrated with the premium audio and gives me bluetooth, ipod connection, rear camera view, and on road and off road sat nav inc safety and red light cameras, school zones etc.

So i want all that functionality in the D4, but my understanding is the factory fitted option, which is expensive will still not have the saftey camera info, and no option for 4wd maps.

Is there an aftermarket alternative? that will fit into the dash and can integrate with steering wheel controls etc Or am i wrong about the D4 nav functionality?

thanks

Simon

I have the same questions on a 2012 D4.

I am wondering if anyone has fitted this Advanced ICE interface? Advanced ICE Pty Ltd - Land Rover from 2012 Reverse Camera + VIM (http://www.advancedice.com.au/products2/Range-Rover-2009/RL-LR12-TF)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/03/1103.jpg

If anyone has fitted it, does it integrate with the OEM camera software so it displays automatically and does the currently inactive "NAV" button integrate etc?

I emailed them, and their reply was "does it have a full colour screen". I sent pics of my screen, which does have colours in 4wd mode, plus other screens, but no replies for a week.

If it works.....I will order one.

The vision assist pack on the SE gives you adaptive lights, reverse camera, surround cameras, tow assist and Hi ICE stereo to go with it. Good value just over $3000.

Hi Simonics

I purchased a second hand Disco 4 recently and upgraded the low spec stereo to have NAV DVD and all that good stuff. I have written about it in the Disco 4 NO NAV to NAV thread. I am very happy with how it turned out. My only gripe is the Bluetooth quality is not that flash (works fine but sounds tinny). Saying that if I could have purchased a Disco 4 with the factory nav option installed that would have been better but there are not many second hand Disco 4's around so you may not have the choice. If you do end up getting a Disco 4 with the Nav screen but no reverse camera you can add one easily using the GVIF interface (will show automatically when reverse selected) this also enables you to have AV inputs to the disco 4 screen which you could use for off road nav. There are lots of write ups on how to do this on both this forum and the UK one. Sorry but I don't know if the factory NAV has safety cams. Also I think there may have been some changes to the stereos and screens in 2012 but if you are after a second hand one I doubt this will affect you.

"Update for Case #CASE00679 - "MY12 Land Rover D4 with HighICE No Nav/camera"

Hello Diana,

Thank you very much for your enquiry.

Unfortunately we have not currently completed testing on this car yet, but we should know if we can integrate reverse camera to one of these vehicles by the end of the week. Navigation is not able to be added with the RL-LR12-TF, but we will also be working on a solution for this car in the near future.

Regards
Leigh"

I'll keep the forum advised about updates.

@ Lotz-A-Landies - i actually managed to find the manufacturer of these, and have contacted them directly but no response yet.
Land_Rover_Multimedia_Generation_2 (http://www.caraudio-systems.de/deu/Land_Rover_Multimedia_Generation_2.html)

Their C1 - LR10 model seems to suggest that you might be able to plug in an external Satnav device and have it controlled via the touch screen.

I know Garmin have the GVN53, which might plug in, but you can't control it via the screen.

@ Disco4pilot - thanks for that - i read your excellent post - you have done a great job there!! That might well be another option then. So that works with standard stereo - would it also work with the Premium ICE package?

What does the standard tft screen display? is it just the radio controls? I guess it doesn't have the 4x4 info (which i suppose is a bit of a gimmick anyway?)

I do not think it would work with the Premium ICE package as it integrates into the stereo rather than just being an add on. Does the premium ICE package come with a colour screen?

The standard tft screen just shows the radio and the telephone and enables you to set the cars time. Takes up a lot of room and does very little. My $20,000 airport car has a screen that does more...

There seem to be a few options for fitting nav to the low line stereo. Either the way I went (Chinese fully integrated), or move the factory screen to the glove box or somewhere else and fit a touch screen and then have inputs into that touch screen or fit a touch screen and an adapter to change the non touch screen display from whatever land rover use to a PAL signal and display this on the new screen (still need to relocate the non touch screen as it has all the control electronics integrated). Obviously there are also lots of other ways to achieve the same thing like just having an ipad on a mount but these were the options I found to have it look factory.

As for the stereos that have the colour screen fitted it seems to be possible and relatively easy (couple of hundred Dollars from the UK) to add a different video display (reverse camera or DVD etc) by installing a GVIF interface which basically plugs into the screen and converts a PAL or NTSC signal (standard video) to a GVIF signal (propitiatory video signal used by the display) and displays this on the screen. You then use the AUX audio selection for Audio. As far as I understand this doesn't actually integrate with the Land Rover system it simply enables you to switch between the Land Rover display and what you would like displayed with an IR remote (it does this automatically for reverse CAM). Looking at the link you posted this seems to be a different option than the GVIF interface. The only touch screens I have used use USB so I'm sure it would be possible to use these new adapters to display nav that you can control. Maybe through a carpc setup. Sounds like a fun project!!

Good idea finding all this out before you buy the car... Me... well I just bought one second hand and then spent hours and hours (days probably) figuring out how I could achieve what I wanted. :)

Hi Brett,

We did get your email Thank you.

But unfortunately we have not seen a car yet that we can test our products on. We have a product that will hopefully give navigation and reverse camera input to the screen, but we are just waiting for a car that we can test on.

Anyone want to be a crash test dummy for this ? They are in QLD so a little too far for me to drive over.

Just an update on my new proposed solution to this..

I have been testing memory maps on my pc and android phone. I plot my routes at home and then copy them to the phone. Works great.
So now will get a tablet for the car for 4wd maps, and just keep in the incar nav for the streets. Being able to use pinch to zoom on a tablet to go from hema to topo maps is way better than using 4wd maps on an oem system.

Then to get the speed cameras I am just running camsam app on the phone. This is perfect as I have the same issue in my other car.

Brett.....

Must have the colour screen on 2012 model....I have seen a 2011 model with the screen being much smaller and did not have the 4x4 button, and colour screen, so must have been an upgrade for cars built after July 2011.
