LR4 towing height

My caravan has a 2inch lift and measures 54 cm from ground to coupling. Will the height of the car's towball be ok or will I need to add my Hayman Reese WDH to the car for adjusting the height of the ball? and will the tailgate fall onto the trailer hitch if it needs to be raised?

Hi Glenn,
You can't use a WDH with the D4. The best way out would be a different height tongue insert.
Given that the standard towball clears the rear tailgate by about 250mm when it is down, this should'nt be a problem.

I just turned my tow hitch upside down and put the tow ball through the other way. I have seen plenty of others do the same and haven't heard of any issues.

The cheapest would be another tongue with an extra 100mm offset, but you may want to consider a Mitch Hitch from Mitchell Bros.
I don't know what tongue you would require with that though.

My D3 has a Mitch Hitch fitted and I use the factory D2a's tow coupling and with a similar hitch height to yours on the van it sits pretty level, mind you I also have 265x60x18 A/T's on it which raises the D3 a bit as well.

My van has a Trigg hitch which may make some difference in height compared to a ball though. A question if you don't mind, did your van come from the factory with a hitch height of 540 mm?

Hi,

I tow an All Terrain Camper Trailer and it has a tregg hitch height of apprx 640mm measured at the bottom of the Tregg Poly Block. I orignially ran it with the standard tow bar whic was way to low even with an inverted tongue. I now run it with the Mitchell bros hitch and the standard inverted tonguw and it is about 20mm nose down on normal height so in off road height woudl be slighlty over the ideal compromise as far as I am concerend. With the Mitch Hitch you also get fantastic ramp over /under performance of the trailer coupling.

On the extended tongues make sure if you go that path and get one suitabel for your trailer weight many of them are only rated at 1.5T.

Glenn, I had a Mitch Hitch on my D3 which I felt was needed, however I have the standard hitch on the D4 and it works fine with all my trailers.

I would be considering a replacement tongue before the mitch hitch, unless you are planning some serious off roading with a tin tent.

Hayman Reese now make a height adjustable tow lug, without all of the WDH gear. It is 3-5 tonne rated and can be used inverted if required. I did post all of the detail recently. A search would find it. Sorry I cannot recall which thread. I can remember the cost was not huge. I think it was under $300.00
