View Full Version : Trying to sound proof a 130 DC - rear panel vibration

I have recently bought and installed some relatively cheap "soundproofing" material. I have only applied about 1 sqm of it mainly around the firewall but it has made a big difference to engine noise coming into the cab.
However what I am finding is that the rear panel of the DC (ie the panel behind the back seat) vibrates and drums at a cruising speed of, say, greater than 90kph. When I fold the rear seats forward I find that thumping the panel with fist or mallet you can hear the vibrations clearly as if there are loose bits on it.
Has anyone else found that their rear panel does this and how did you stop it (assuming you were able to). I am thinking that I might have to remove the tub to get at the panel in order to rivet some strengthening bars or braces across it.
Is removing the tub a difficult job?
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice on this.

You can buy sound deadening sheets made by a company called Henkel under the brand name of Teroson.

Teroson - Brands - Henkel (http://www.henkel.com/industrial/brands-5497.htm'redDotUID=8000000380&parentredDotUID=null&BU=industrial&countryCode=com&brand=000000038M)

They supply most of the OE market with sealants and sound deadening sheets and quality repairers use them. They are more or less sheets of bitumen material. If you stick a few of those on you should be ok. You might want to also fill that area with some of their foam. This should also help to stop the back wall from drumming.
I have had more VW bugs and Kombi's than i care too think about and all have had this stuck onto and into every panel and cavity to keep noise and vibration levels to a minimum.
Hope this helps.

I uses a self adhesive under bonnet sound deadener on the rear wall, did a nice job and easy to install. I picked it up at a auto vinyl supplier.
You have to pull the rear seats to do it properly but it's not hard pulling the seats.

There's also a product called Dynamat....this is what I lined my 130 with. Essentially 3mm bitmuen 'goop' backed onto aluminum tape.

Pricey, but did the ticket...

If you can find one to look at, compare the rear panel of a series 2,2A or 3 rear panel with yours. The 130s is the same panel but with all the strengthening/stiffening members removed and a different shaped window hole cut into it.Very weak and wobbly.
Unless you really like the later rear window fit a series rear panel. It might just save your head in the event of a slow rollover if you don't have a roll bar, although it isn't a real substitute for one.
