Info on 250xflow with c4 box in a series LR

Hi all,

My uncle once did a conversion in his series 3 LR. It was a 250 xflow with a c4 auto with the Landrover transfer attached to it. I'm no mechanic so I can't tell u how it was all done. But what i want to know is if any other similar conversions have been done??

He had the auto built pretty tough, like when it changed gears it "slammed" into gear, there was no smooth gear changes :)

There was also a VERY handy cam installed also with a few other things done to the engine. All in all it was a very pleasant Landy to drive. Very powerful (around the 180-200hp) and great on the highway. Fuel economy was pretty good, around the 12l/100klms.

Just seems it was such a great combo yet I can't see many done this way...

Maks 4 wd adapters used to make an adapter to mate Ford C4 to landrover transfer case
I converted my stretched 145 inch wheelbase Landrover to automatic many years ago but my fuel consumption was nowhere near as good as that

But then I saw the light and bought a defender

The Ford engine and C4 auto conversion was a popular one for series rovers and I consider more reliable than a Holden conversion. I tried both years ago and was very impressed with the Ford one. Harsh gear changes can be tamed with an adjustable modulator valve.

I looked into re powering a SIII with a Crossflow Ford a long time ago, but the drawback ( As I saw it) was that there is excessive exhaust plumbing needed - ie the exhaust exits drivers side and you have to route the exhaust under the sump to the rest of the piping. With the holden, the exhaust was on the same side. These days, a diesel transplant is a better idea.

with a landy you need to keep it simple

Yeah I can't remember how my uncle did the plumbing for the exhaust...

I do remember taking it for a test run with him after he had done some mods to it. We where driving along the highway on the way to Jericho, night time, bonnet was left off, and as he was accelerating up to 160klms/hr (yeahi know, hard to believe) the extractors were glowing red hot. Was pretty cool. Well, I was only 17 then, so it was cool at the time :)
