I'm looking at fitting a GME 3540 UHF CB into my new D4 se and wondering where others have mounted theirs?
http://www.gme.net.au/public/images/products/tx3540_f.jpg
The GME 3540 is preferred because all the controls are on the handset but am wondering where people mount the unit? I was thinking of behind the glovebox.
Also where is a good place to mount the handset bracket without drilling holes and where for an external speaker?

Hi Diana,
The other option from GME TX3540 (or TX3340), is the Icom IC440N - which has the advantage of having speaker and mic in the handset. So no need for external speaker.
If I were to install an external speaker for the GMEs, I would use the space where the centre speaker is usually located - as I don't have a high-line stereo.
Regarding the handset, I am about to order one of these:
Land Rover Disco 4 Heavy Duty Mount | Land Rover | Dashmount Brackets | Dashmount - Dashmount (http://www.dashmount.co.uk/index.php/Dashmount/Dashmount-Brackets/Land-Rover/Land-Rover-Disco-4-Heavy-Duty-Mount.html)
Freight is the killer on these - maybe a group purchase is in order? :D
Cheers,
Rob

Thanks Rob
I looked at the ICOM 440N (yes I like ICOM) but didn't realise they had a speaker in the handset. (I have the hiICE audio so the speaker option is out)
I'd be in for a group buy on the brackets.

I thought only the premium ICE (logic 7) had the centre speaker?

I had the same game radio mounted in my D3 under the steering column removable panel so out of the way, I extended the handset to come out through the hole in the coin tray just forward of the gear shift. Just had to poke a small hole in the rubber liner to run the cord through. The handset and cord curled up neatly in the coin tray while not in use.
If you sold the car it's easily remove able

The answer may be beside you. The centre box has clearance for the unit beside the seat mounting rails and having the hand set right beside you on the top RHS allows you, front or rear passangers to access the mic. It is easy to get to and not really in sight at all. feet from the back cannot get to the unit at all.
Fits and works well in my D3 so may/should work in your D4.

I know it may not all that likely, but since drowning my RRc to over my feet when it was only about a year old I'm reluctant about mounting something like a radio at floor level, so I'd rather mount it a little above seat level and why the thought about behind the glovebox trim.
Does anyone know if there is any space or is it filled up with airbag stuff?

Diana,
I have the 3340 version & i mounted mine under the drivers seat atop the amplifier.
I know you wish to mount the head unit elsewhere & as it is a small unit, you could probably mount it above the drivers kick panel (above the pedals so to speak) there is a fair amount of room there & you could velcro/double sided tape it to the tray. Or even make a bracket for it to sit on if you wish.
The only downside i could see is the speaker that is inbuit (i assume as i dont know the model you are looking at) in the head unit needs to be not tucked away somewhere as you not be able to hear it, mine is fine under the seat & i can hear it quite well. Just something you need to consider.
tx3340 install: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/103694-gme-tx3340-install.html
Aerial install: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/104077-aerial-install-d3-d4-tailgate.html
I would try not to mount anything behind the glove box for a couple of reasons, Firstly the CJB lives there(need access to this for fuses), & you also have a nice airbag in the dash.

I've got the IC-440 mounted under my seat and the mike/speaker up on the right side of the centre "H" section - drilled two holes through it and reinforced the back with a small bit of wood - easy to get at and I can hear it quite well. I've made a concious decision NOT to get my D3 into deep water so the position of the base set doesn't worry me - as with most things "it's horses for courses"
cheers :)

I have the Icom in my D4. The radio is under the passenger seat. The mic socket is attached to the passenger side of the centre console by drilling two small holes through the plastic down near the trans tunnel and securing the socket via small black cable tie.
When in use the mic sits in the cubby hole to the left of the ash tray. When not in use its unplugged and kept in the centre console bin.
I've got the Icon set to auto turn off after 2 hours.

RobHi Rob
I decided to go ahead and order one of these mounts, not for the microphone but for the telephone handset. Yes the shipping is expensive, but what is worse is the fact that the company "Dashmount.co.uk" don't even understand the VAT system on items exported out of the EC. They claim you have to be a wholesaler with a HM Revenue and Customs VAT certificate.
I wonder if they send the GB£5.50 VAT collected to HM Customs or pocket it?

Rob
Has anyone done this? I couldn't find a way to run a cable to this location.

You can put a wire thrugh it comes out under the drivers side. Take the covers off both ends.

RobJust letting people know the Dashmount above does not fit the MY2012 D4, the angles are all wrong. It likely can be made to fit by bending and adjusting but you may as well start from scratch and save the dollars. It also came with no instructions and no VAT invoice to reclaim the overcharged VAT.
Not happy Jan!

No different from any other model so I do not know why it would not fit.
Are you sure they sent the right mount?

The mount was correct their quality control is up the creek.
By adjusting all but one of the folds by re-bending and twisting the mount I've managed to fit it. However for a cost better than $50 for about 20c of bent metal, you'd expect the bends to be correct.

Should of bent your own:

Easy done, maybe 45 minutes was all it took.

The only thing that fitted correctly were the holes for the base of the phone handset bracket, but given there are about a dozen holes, it should have fitted.
Unfortunately the beige I chose to re-paint the bracket is too yellow, I should have swapped for one with more reddish hue.

Could you take a sample trim panel to the paint shop for them to scan and colour match? The panel under the steering wheel is easy to remove by pulling down the top edge hard.
Otherwise black may look better?

In daylight it doesnt look too bad and a lot better than the black against the almond trim. Now that it's fitted up, I may just remove it and go back to the auto shop and get one of the other beiges and importantly checking against the car, before buying.
(Next time I'll let it dry completely, to save the marks on soft paint! :D )
