Hi all,

Just moved to Brisbane from the UK and bought my beloved 110 TD5 double cab with me. It is currently at the docks being unloaded.

I obviously need to have it compliance tested and plated before I can have it registered. Is anyone aware of any likely stumbling block in this process? I suspect that child restraints will be some thing any one answering this question will metion.

Are they required even if I have no intention of transporting children. If so does anyone have any advice on fitment? I don't think a crab bar will be possible as it is a doube cab.

Cheers

John

I doubt you will need child restraint attachment points, the defender is a commercial vehicle for registration purposes. It means they can get away without airbags, etc, etc.

Is it a tray back or double cab? If so its classed as a commercial and won't need the rear child restraints.
At least that was the case with my 110DC which I brought over and into NSW from Blighty!

As long as it is unmodified there should be no problems at all. Modifications could open a can of worms, depending of course on what they are!

Great thanks for that, sounds like I was getting un necessarily worried about child restraints!
Regarding mods, its pretty standard outwardly and engine wise. It just has a rear alu cab, a bullbar, winch and winch bumper, water tank and long range fuel tank. These should be ok, shouldn't they?
Next where to go first!

What paperwork did you have BEFORE the vehicle arrived?
Is it under a carnet from the UK or elsewhere? http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/ImportingaRoadVehicleFactSheetDEC11.pdf
Importing Vehicles to Australia (http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/index.aspx)
Most importantly you need to review this Application for Approval to Import a Vehicle (http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/general/Application.aspx) before the vehicle clears customs and you take delivery of the vehicle.
IN NSW a private import has to have a private import plate affixed by an approved automotive engineer who assesses that the vehicle meets the ADR current at the time of manufacture in the UK, at the present time the all automotive engineers in NSW have to be reaccredited so if the car is the be registered in NSW then you need to contact Roads and Maritime Services.

Hi,
I just went though this with my 2005 XS Td5 90. 3 months ago now. It was very easy and i had the vehicle registered on the same day as the plate.
Once you have it in your hands clear of AQIS and Customs... Hopefully they are nice to you with charges etc. I was lucky they did not even want to wash mine they just inspected so AQIS charges were quite low.
You will need to contact someone that does compliance. We are very lucky in Queensland having very little B@hit rules compared to other states.
All you will just need a LO3 Personal Import Plate which is a normal Blue Qld mod plate stamped up with the Personal Import ADR Compliance exemption code LO3. You won't have a problem with any of your mods even your UK towbar will be fine. They only worry about Glass, Seatbelts and the KM/H on the speedo.
Once this is done you just need to get a Normal Roadworthy / Safety Cert. Make Sure on the Safety Cert they put down compliance plate or put in the other section mod plate. You might find the Roadworthy inspector wants to see the build date. Which won't be possible as it does not have an ADR Plate fitted. Tell him to use the date on the Mod Plate.
For compliance i used DB Autotech Mod Plate Compliance (http://www.dbautotech.com.au/) they were very good. He came to my work did the plate in under 30 min. Most of that time was spent making and fitting it. I found fitting the big blue QLD on the passenger side is the best spot for a defender and the drivers side for the federal import sticker. (Example photos attached)
Once this was completed i proceeded to queensland transport which i happened to get a really nice person who was happy with all the documents. They were happy with the value i put down for the New Rego Duty and did not need to see proof. I got plates that day and drove away smiling.
im more then happy to answer any questions just personal message me.

A quick question on the rear rego plate. The UK style "square" rear plate is not allowed here, or at least in WA. Do you have to fit the little wedge thing to suit the long rectangular plate or do you just have it stick past the body?

The mods wont be an issue. Mine was a lot more modified that yours and despite people suggesting I would have issues, I had absoloutely none.

I got a QT authorised Engineer to do my import compliance (a handful of adr's all of which it met) and he also signed off on my roll cage as that was needed.

While the engraved blue plate will be done at the time, the gold sticker will be posted to you. You have to send off one of the completed forms to a name plate company who send it back.

With regard to the number plate, mine just sticks out a bit. I probably should get a wedge!

I found with the 90, that I could position it so it just caught in the rear door. This meant the plate did not stick out beyond the wing. A godd few slams and it was nicely formed into position.

If you've got the alu cab on the back, can you move it into the centre above the spare wheel? That's what I did with mine, no problems. Just had to relocate the rego light.

Sent using Forum RunnerYou have to be a little careful where the plate is mounted, in NSW number plates must not be fitted above 1.3 metres from the ground. Road Transport (vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007: Schedule 2, Clause 61, http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/inforce/subordleg 522 2007 (http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/maintop/view/inforce/subordleg+522+2007+cd+0+N)

No worries, if you have an attachment to the truck then nothing is a hassle as you say. I just thought I'd mention it since the U.K is chock full of the buggers - my thinking was you could have saved money and had something just as good, if not better at the other end for less money. :)
