Ipad 2 4G

Im looking at getting the new Ipad, has anyone else got one?

Whats your thoughts on them?

Only thing I know is that the new iPad is not compatible with Telstra's 4G network. Apparantly the 3G is faster on the new iPad.

^what he said. Apparently what Telstra call 4G is not what the rest of the world calls 4G...

I am interested in getting one though. A few mates have the IPad 2 and they look pretty nice. The new one has a much higher res screen plus a better (5mp) camera too.

If you get one, we need a review!

I ordered one yesterday.... so I guess I can tell you more in a week or so...:D

As far as 4G goes.. you are right, what we get told is 4G isn't... nothing new in Aussie telco's twisting the truth in their marketing.

But these things will still run on 3G etc.. the coverage and speed of Australian 4G isn't really there yet for most of us anyway.

I was going to buy an Ipad 2 a couple of months ago, but waited... this thing seems a significant step up and is cheaper :)

Telstra's 4 G covers a pretty small part of the country at the moment... unless "working away" is the CBD of a capital city - don't hold your breath,

They claim some regionals...but history makes me very sceptical. Usually a big variation between teh official coverage maps and what actually happens. ;)

There are several technologies which count as 4G. WiMax has been out for a while, but LTE is now becoming more common. Trouble is, neither are compatible with existing 3G modems used in iPads and the like. Not a problem for now, as the 4G networks are mainly limited to the CBDs but they are stunningly quick!

realistically what most people are getting when they get $G gear ATM is 3.5G. its still faster than 3g but when your in an area thats covered by the 4g rollout you'll be working on 4g. its in the disclaimer. Should be good in canberra and probably sydney/melb CBD.

Not rolled out properly is only half the story though...

As correctly pointed out above, we have had Wimax 4G for a while... but the discussion around the iPad revolves around LTE.

Telstra has launched 4G on the 1800 Mhz fequency - and I believe Optus is following them.

Trouble is 4G on the iPad (and much of the rest of the world) is set up for 700Mhz and 2100Mhz)

We cant totally blame the Telcos.. because 700Mhz which is widely tipped to be the future of LTE - is currently used here by analogue TV. (Until 2013)

In the meantime, those with the new Ipad in Aus. will simply connect through 3G or GSM. This unit still supports plenty of connection technologies other than 4G. [UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) ] in theory DC-HSDPA could give you speeds upto 42Mbps - though in the real world that is unlikely.

Anyway, back on track with this thread....

There are a lot of other reasons to buy this iPad rather than jus 4G... has/is anyone else taking the plunge?

A quick update for those thinking about the new iPad.

I got mine on Friday - 64gig Wifi +4G model.

It's the first iPad I've owned.. but I have used iPad 1 and 2 as well as multiple Android tablets at work.

This thing is great... screen is truely amazing and for those with concerns about 4G compatability - it's still significantly faster than its predecessors.

The Telstra coverage at my place is not great..but I did a little test earlier today.

I did a speedtest on my iphone 4...then pulled the sim and switched it to new iPad (Havent set up a plan for the iPad yet) and tested again. I did 3 tests for each and averaged them all tests were done sitting on my couch :D:

iPhone 4 (Telstra 3G) 3.91 Mbps Down 2.31 Mbps Up

New iPad (Telstra 3G) 8.53 Mbps Down 3.59 Mbps Up

Reading other sites like Whirlpool, there are people in better coverage areas reporting download speeds above 20Mbps.

So overall pretty happy with it.
