td4 kncking sound

Hi guys i would like to get your opinions on td4 knocking and non starting issue.
Missus was driving once then knocking began so she turned it off.
I've just recently got a mobile mechanic to check it out. He says it done either a conrod bearing or bottom end. I find it hard to believe it as he said as the knocking didnt slowly come around but bang just did! ive taken the injectors out at one stage and listen if there was knocking? There wasnt any without any injectors and obviously no compression. I asked the mechanic why wont it start even with one failed cylinder? he said ahh diesel engine wont but petrol will. Does that make sense? Also One cylinder down engine wont start?

It will start on 3 cylinders.
remove the sump and big ends and check condition. This will make sure they are ok or not. Dont mix up caps or bearings. Caps are mated to con rod, This also applies to cap direction. There is also a top and bottom bearing.
