Hey guys,

I picked up some LED Daytime Running Lights and am interested to find out how people have installed them, and the wiring to use. Obviously they are 12 volt with not off trigger from the headlights so they will be on all the time.

I've never installed lights before so am trying to get a few ideas. I need them to switch on with the ignition on.

Can I piggy back off something else in the engine bay?

These are simple 12 V.

I have done a search thanks but some of it was a bit techy if I don't know what I am looking for.

Cheers,

mx

Oops, sorry. The equipment / photo's. (SCA LED DRL with headlight control.)

The cables. I am working in the presumption that the *LAMP* cable connects to the + 12V cable to the headlight to turn the lights off at night.

Any help would be great, it's got to be something simple.

(Yes I have looked at the RAVE manual.)

If they are proper DRLs you will need to connect to the headlight signal. The DRL LEDs are too bright for night use, that's why you will notice the OEM Audi, Merc ect either turn off completely or dim down at night (not to mention ADRs). Audis also dim when the indicator is turned on (on the side that is indicating). But if they are supercheap special then they're probably not that bright.

Did they come with instructions or a wiring diagram?

I'm have no first hand experience but from what I've read on other threads is that the black box is a voltage sensitive relay. When the engine starts and the battery receives charge from the alternator the VSR senses this and turns the DRLs on. It also senses when the engine is turned off and turns the DRLs off.

So all you have to connect is the battery positive and negative and joint the lamp wire to the headlight positive.

I would suggest park lamp positive rather than headlamp positive, so long as your park lamps stay on with the headlamps.

Dare I ask why you want them at all?

These are the only instructions, what is on the box. Hardly detailed but probably simple.

Thanks so far guys.

Wire as shown. As beeuety said use park light positive for the small lamp connection.
And post a pic of them when your done!

As in directly to the battery itself? Does anyone know the + colour of the light cable.

Yes, I will post pics.

Cheers.

Switch on the parkers, find a parking globe, pull it out, connect the wire to one of the two wires then the other, one will operate the running light off/dim function.

Okay, now I sound like an idiot, but do I connect to the actual battery including neg (rather than + - power lead)? The reason I ask is that I am not clear on whether the control box will detect power and switch on the lights, rather than connecting to + - power from the ignition.

I suppose I'll give it a crack.

FYI, I've done some more work on the Truck.

Cheers and thanks a lot.

the + and - battery go to your battery or a nice solid earth for the - battery as that will be connected back through the body of the vehicle and a strap back to the -ve terminal of the battery. The + can go to the back of your alternator or the starter as they go back to your +ve terminal on your battery (on a D2 you will have access to the battery unlike a defender so no need to worry about connecting to the starter etc.) The + lamp goes to the your park light wire.

when it's all said and done, it is a hell of a lot easier to just turn your parking lights on during the day:p

Thanks again guys,

It did end up pretty easy to set up, my main concern was frying some of the electrics.

Why did I get them? I'm a gadget fiend.

As you can see from the photo's they installed fine. They need a paint and slight re-allignment but other than that it was easy.

I can't understand why people need to have lights on during the day; there's already enough glare and reflection on the roads without car lights on. Not too different from driving around with so called "fog lights" on - big irritation as far as I'm concerned.
