View Full Version : D3 TDV6 18" offroad Tyres choices

Hi all.
I have had my D3 TDV6 2007 for about 3 years now and am finding myself doing more and more offroad with it.
I have been looking around at offroad what tyres are available to fit my 18” rims ( 255/65r18) and could only find the general grabber AT.
Then i found if i fitted a set of Johnson Rods - http://johnsonrods.com/johnson_rods_2_002.htm (http://johnsonrods.com/johnson_rods_2_002.htm) i could fit a set of 275/65r18 on it which really opened up the tyres choices.
I only problem as this will raise by about 115mm ( 50mm tyres and 65mm Johnson rods) and makes it illegal with the RTA.
Can anyone who has gone down this road give my some advice?

I've had a great run with the GG-AT2s - mainly VHC and Flinders Ranges, I'm sure lots of people will jump in to give you good advice.

We had quite the opposite with our GG AT2s, basically ours are stuffed after only a few thousand Ks, with sidewall damage and lugs off.

There are a few choices now, 265/65/18 BFGs or Maxxis (I think) 265/60/18 Cooper AT3s, and 255/60/18 GG ATs.

Your best option is to go to 17" rims, much wider selection of tyre brands and sizes.

I have looked into 17" option but could only find steel rims which would put to much strain on the CV joints ect. Do you know where to get 17" alloys?

Performance Wheels do 2 types, BB6 and RV-5 for the Discovery 3.

BTW, Dynamic steel rims are lighter than the factory alloys.

I wouldn't be driving around permanently on 275/65R18's - they're too large. If you have them on a second set of rims for occasional use then fine.

If you're sticking to 18" rims, the 265/60R18 is slightly oversize, but plenty of choices (it's also an easier size to source outside of the city in case of emergencies). Either the Mickey Thompson STZ or Cooper AT3's would handle most medium-duty off-roading.

If you're going oversize, the 285/60R18 will fit with some slight rubbing (and you'd have to deflate the spare to get it to fit) - the Cooper Zeon LTZ is worth a look in this size.

For 17" alloys, try BB6 Performance Wheels

If you are looking at increasing ride height there are two members here who are also vendors of products that provide vehicle lifts;

gghaggis - does a similar sensor rod replacement (check his Green Oval Website out for more details) which can be easily changed back to normal heights for on road driving and or taken off and originals put back on for dealer service time.

Graeme - sells the Llams electronic height controller kit which in my very layman terms adjusts the electronic set points of the the air suspension there by tricking the vehicle it being able to running at up to a 50mm lift or run at off road height without lowering over 50km hr or drop access height to almost the bump stops etc all with a the turn of a switch.

Anyway better to support Australian products from forum members than US ones in my opinion !

Regarding tyres there are starting to be a few more option in the OEM size in addition to the General Grabber (both AT and AT2) and these include;

Continental Cross Contact AT
Pirrelli Scorpion
Yokahoma have one as well I recall.

There might be one or two others as well in the A/T range.

Not so sure on mud tyres and I think you have to increase size slightly as well.

There is lots of discussion on the pros and cons of each of the ride height adjustment methods and tyres if you have a look back through previous posts.

Off topic by my only other suggestion, being in a similar position to you with a D# I have owned for 3 yr and getting off road more often is I recently purchased and installed a set of rock sliders/sill protectors from a forum member Brad (Disco3QLD) and I think they are a good investment for more serious off road work.

I'm very conscious of significantly larger diameter tyres preventing a vehicle from being moved if for some reason the suspension drops to the bump-stops. Whilst this is not a common occurance (eg loss of signals from 2 height sensors), I feel that the ability to drive or move the vehicle, even if it is on the bump-stops, is mandatory. My tyres (245/70-17) are only 0.8" larger in diameter than the standard 30" yet 1 rubs on a rear inner guard when on the bump-stops and makes quite a racket when moving even very slowly. Any larger would probably be a show-stopper. No systems that raise a vehicle by modifying height sensor information for the ecu, whether they be shorter rods or electronic devices, are capable of raising the vehicle if the suspension ecu decides to drop to the bump-stops. However Gghaggis has a solution for this situation.

Used but in VGC.

Have two for sale if someone wants em.

I advise you to buy rims in 17 "
Best for "off road", the sides are higher, less fragile!
Easy to find the original rims D3

The BMW may be slightly wider than LR,so maybe better tyre choices?

Be careful with Bmw rims ,
As at Jan 2009, all Discovery 3 factory fit and dealer fit wheels (17, 18 & 19") have been rated at 940kg per rim. While it is physically possible to fit wheels from the Range Rover Sport and some later FFRR wheels, it should be noted that the rims are rated for a lower weight.
FFRR - 925kg
RRS - 900kg
Fitment of the FFRR or RRS rims may therefore have an impact on your insurance. If in doubt, always check with your insurer. To date there have been no incidents reported on DISCO3.CO.UK of either FFRR or RRS wheels failing, nor have there been any reports of insurers questioning the fitment of these wheels.
