Retractable Seat Belts in Series Ute?

Hi All,

wondering if anyone has pics, diagrams or descriptions of how they've fitted retractable seat belts into their series ute (with standard seats)?

I've seen a pic of a bar running behind the seats with the belts attached to it, but I can't find it again.

I happen to have the seat box out and the seat belt retraction rollers unbolted so should be able to provide some good photo's this weekend. The only thing is I don't know what they came out of or how they were purchased, as they were in the Landy when I bought it.

I have brand new belts from a 110 (military) but can't work out a suitable way to mount them that would meet engineering standards. The barrel is too large to fit behind the seat or down on the seat box near the floor.

Series 3 with retractable belts as standard had the belt running through a loop at the shoulder level (same anchorage as non-retractable belt, depends on body type), to a reel on the bulkhead behind the seat, mounted on a bolt 175mm in from the outside wall and 195mm below the top rail of the tub, on the top flange of the reinforcing rib. The hole has a 50mm square aluminium reinforcing patch spot welded on the outside (in the tub). The same could be fitted to any Series 2/2a either using a Series 3 tub or reinforcing (and presumably getting engineering approval) the existing one.

The two lower attachments are the same as for the fixed belts, a bracket on the side of the seat box, in the lower back corner, attached by the bolts holding the seat box, and at least two versions of reinforcing for the anchorage points in the middle.

Those pictures are quite different to the set-up in my DeeDee S2a. The barrel is mounted beside the seat box. It is a close thing to interfering with the door when closed but it misses it and works fine. There's a possibility I'll get photo's of it tomorrow.

Mick_Marsh's pictures are the setup I described, except the shoulder mount is non-standard, or at any rate different to the setup I have (which is standard for late S3) - I suspect that shoulder mount is actually a bottom outside mount in Mick's setup. Ideally it should be lower. I'll see if I can get a picture and post it.

Good point John!

If the mounting is too high, the belt will cut into a wearer's neck in the event of an accident :eek:

I have retractables in my 79 S3 panel van, only difference is the shoulder mount, that is mounted to the support bracket between the door posts and the side\roof seam.

Hello from Brisbane.

I am fairly sure that my 1975 SWB ute came new with retractable belts.

The upper mount can be seen at the top of the photo below.

It is an integral part of the rear panel - bolt is threaded into it.
