Hi Guys,

I'm thinking about getting a diesel dual cab defender ute (I think they are called 130 ????) so I need all the information that you can give me PLEASE.
I'm looking at a 2009 model so is there anything in particular I should be looking for ?

Thanks for your time & help.
All the best.

Big question with a bigger answer. A 09 defender is also known as a puma, it was the code ford used for the motors developementvwhen they owned LR. So from 07 to 11 is basically a puma.
130 stands for the amount of inches between axles. So you can get a 130 twin cab style side (hcpu), or tray back, or just a tray back ute. 110 comes in a wagon or a style side twin cab, or a tray back ute. 90's are the little ones.

There is lots to know, much of it in here already.

Tell us a bit about what your looking at and we'll try and fill some gaps for you.

300 TDi until 1997, before that was the 200 TDi, TD5 1998-2006, ford engine from 2007 to current, commonly know as Puma engine.

So if you want a 300 TDi you will be looking at vehicles pre 1997:)

Hey! I live in Sydney and drive a 130 - no problems. Just get a cheap reversing camera, you can't go wrong.

BTW - I wouldn't go back to a wagon now.

Agree, though ours is a tray back so a bit harder to see over the back, but reversing camera works a treat:D, and I always reverse in were the garden beds are to tuck the nose in;):D

Thanks Guys,

OK so if I got this right I'm looking at a 2009 diesel 130 twin cab style side Puma ?

I live in the country & wanted the dual cab so I can still run around with the wife & kids in it but use it around the farm.

Thanks for the info I'll be going back to have a look at this one again soon so we'll see how it drives.

yep that's right. The official mane is Defender 130 HCPU (high capacity pick up) but twin cap will do. 1.5 tone carry, 3t tow. 2.4 common rail diesel, 6 speed manual.

reverse park is the way to go as others have mentioned. Mine is the daily driver and work truck, once you get used to them they are fine. Actually they are no longer than a Jap twin cab but look bigger as they have ground clearance.

good luck, they are a fine vehicle for the farm and family.

I've had my 1995 130 for 7 years. Love it, but is a compromise, albeit a good one. Not the most comfy to drive, not the MOST capable 4x4(close to it), not the most economical, not the most spacious for passengers, not the most carrying capacity in the tub, not the most powerful.....BUT!!!!!

Unless you want 6 different vehicles to meet easy of those above criteria perfectly, then the 130 was the only choice for me. It's my daily driver, my kid commuter, my wood and soil carrier, AND it's excellent off road, particularly now it has Detroit lockers both ends. (thank you Aussie dollar and lucky 8)
Have fun with it mate.

Detroit lockers both ends. ???

I'm only a novice here but I was under the impression that an auto locker in the front diff of a full time 4wd was not a good idea. However I am here to learn so.....

Front is 'soft locker', as recommended by dealers for the front on FT 4x4s. Been running them for 14 months now and loving them:D
PS, came in at about $1300 for the pair, fitted. Bargain;)

Maybe you mean you have a TruTrac torque biasing diff in the front ?

The No Spin I'm assuming you have in the rear is a 'soft' locker compared to the old style Detroit's/No Spin's.

HI J.D. I live on the other side of Dungog from you. You may already be aware that Modern Motors in Dungog is an experienced Land Rover garage. They would be a good place to contact if you need mechanical advice or inspections.. Feel free to PM me if you would like to talk about the Land Rover experience. I drive a TD5 130 single cab from 2000. Cheers, 130man.
