Did a quick search to no avail. Please point me in the right direction if a thread exists. I am planning on buying a D4 HSE when my current vehicle lease expires Jan 13 and was wondering how good the OEM Winch is? Rating etc... Also wondering if it could be fitted to an ARB winch at a later date?
Cost may prevent me from getting ARB bar and winch at initial purchase and if the OEM winch could be used in a bar fitted later i would go with just that. Otherwise it's a cumalong until funds allow. Then again the cost of OEM winch is probably similar to ARB and aftermarket winch? Thoughts?

The OE winch is just a Warn winch, the LR designed mount is the only thing that makes it special. I do not care for it. I got beat up pretty bad on the winch subject due to the fact my D44 discrete winch is suited for my purpose here in the US.
Some folks now seem to be complaining about the quality of the ARB.
I fitted an XD9000 which I plan to use with a snatch block as necessary. It is quite adequate for the occasional use it will get.
Others suggest, and I certainly would consider fitting something bigger if you go with a winch bumper, as there should be plenty of space.
The LR part number is VUB501471 and you can have a look at it in the link provided (just a random web site) Note the telltale Warn red on the winch. I believe that Land Rover ads their own electrics to the kit, according to the technical support guy at Warn I talked to. I fitted the OEM Winch kit on my D4HSE - but purchased it direct from Duckworth Landrover in the UK (purchased over the net, "Duckworth Parts") as it was half what the dealer in Adelaide wanted for the kit . With $A at $1.09 to the $US at the time and given I purchased all other G4 challenge parts I got a very good deal. It arrived within 10 days.

I went down this path to keep weight down having owned a kitted out D3 (ARB bar with winch) which was damn heavy, fully loaded.

Then RMP (moderator) on this site advsied he had a G4 challenge vehicle and he took the winch kit and front bash plate (separate purchase) off his car, weighed the parts, and found it was near as damn it same weight as an ARB bar (which incorporates a bash plate)

And I cried. :(

A little bit....:no2:

cheers!

Thanks unseenone. I had actually read those threads and yes, you did cop a bit of a beating, but in the end i think all accepted 'each to their own'

Thanks Stornaway SA. Just clarify please; that weight comparison by RMP reflects OEM winch and bashplate being similar to ARB bar only? So add a winch to the bar and the comparison would differ much more? I understand the weight concern and between this site and UK site, opinions about handling being affected differ with some saying none at all and others saying they noticed a considerable difference. I think i will end up saving dollars and go with the ARB Deluxe bar with winch, as i will feel much more comfortable with that protection. I am going to try and get it fitted pre-purchase. By then ARB should have a bar (listed as) available for the HSE variant. I envisage getting the surround camera system (at this stage anyway, as i have read they are not much chop) so i believe these would have to be relocated to the bar as well as the front park sensors and headlight washers.

No, Warn winch plus OEM winch kit plus OEM bash plate = Warn winch plus ARB winch bar. (or close enough)

So, go with the ARB / winch option.;)

There you go, speaking from good experience - having had both!

cheers
