Took my new d4 for its first tow of a caravan and while it tows like a dream. I was disappointed with the amount of mud spray right up the front of the caravan. This was without driving off road even. What will happen if driving on real gravel roads I hate to think.
Has anybody successfully installed or can recommend some mud flaps or rock tammers or have advice on the best.most cost effective option. From other threads looks like the land rover mud flaps are not the best at stopping the damage while there is no doubt they are the best looking.

Check out stonestomper......I personally think this is the best solution. Works for me.

I agree some form of mudflaps are a must especially when driving on gravel roads. I did about 2000kms on gravel towing on a recent trip without mud flaps. When t was wet i sprayd a huge amount of mud up and over the soft floor trailer so much so that i would not have been able to open it without a wash. Then there is the stone damage. The cars paint is well protected with the unpainted lastic trims that run all around the lower section of the car but i discovered that this plastic is now a bit rough as a result of the stones.

My Solution so far which I have only limited testing of is some home made mud flaps front and rear from a hard plastic, I believe it is the same stuff they use in rally cars. I made then as large as I dared on the rear and a bit more sensible for the fronts. So far they have survived on some hairy tracks, I will try and post some photos.

I have Rock tammers and I am not impressed at all. Even with them fitted and at the recommended height my van has stone dint's on the front of it. These dint's are inline with the wheels.

Mowog do you also have some mudflaps installed as well or just the rock tammers installed on the rear of the vehicle. Do you need both installed to achieve good protection?
Paulgoz can you also put up some close up photos on how you mounted your custom mudflaps to the vehicle and screw locations.

I have the basic Land Rover mud flaps. I have been thinking about adding extra rubber to these.

Damn so the config of having both is useless. Thanks for saving me that money Mowog and tryling it myself.

Sorry this is a little off topic as I do not need any major rock protection at this point.
I would like some form of mud flap, I was wondering whether anybody has any experience with these ones available on ebay.

I am waiting on a quote from my local dealer for LR ones but I am guessing that they would be somewhat pricier.

Agree with stonestomper but if rock crawling is onthe cards most options will cop a hiding.
The sand blasting by rocks on the water tank right at the back under my trailer has punctured it in several spots and the outside front edge of the trailers paint for about 2mm on both sides is back to bare metal even with stonestomper.

Pat, don't waste your money.
The Land Rover flaps, and those from E-Bay, are not long enough to stop anything, and I understand, that they will damage if rock climbing, or crawling through hardened mud ruts, as they are quite rigid.
Follow the lead from Craig of DISCO4SE, and make up flaps using the Plastic/Rubber units available from 'Supercheap'.
I used Craig's template, but enlarged it somewhat, using 6mm, reinforced rubber from 'Clark's Rubber', 300mm wide, at $13/Mtr approx.
I tried to imagine what height I would need above the ground, when using the suspension height rods, and travelling faster on gravel, at 'Off Road' height.
Left long, the flaps are easily cut, after you have experimented a bit.
I suffered stone damage to my van on first outing with LR flaps, and worse still, my rear glass has 'copped' a few dings, and that despite having a large sunshade cloth stoneguard that 'Bushtracker' Vans fit as standard.
Best of luck,
Regards, Don.

I put a set of these on my D4 and they went on great and very easy to install, haven't had a problem with them. Cheap enough to replace if you rip one off.

I also have a full length piece of rubber hanging down at the rear do the draw bar.....this protects very well.
The stone stomper protects the front of the camper.

Just a quick update, the dealer quote for 'fitted' LR mudflaps to my D4 was $488.00. Obviously that contains a little (or a lot of) labour. I expect to pay more for genuine accessories but that difference surprised me a bit. And, I must admit I was so quick to say don't worry about it that I forgot to ask the part only price!
I will definitely be trying the other alternatives suggested.

Pat, LR Australia price for front, and rear, flaps is $280. They are a 5 Min; job to fit, so rip off for labour. 90Quid from Duckworth, UK. I did not pay anything for postage as they came in a box with my Safari Snorkle and other 'Goodies'.
Brendan, I am halfway through my Mud flap job. Just taken some pictures, and when I work out how to post them, will do so.
Regards, Don.

Thanks don, look forward to the photos and your tips and tricks.
I have had a look at the rock stompers and they look like quite a good product. I think on the discovery I may still require a combination of both the Rock stompers and some form of mudflaps (I like the idea of custom made as I reckon as everyone else has eluded the plastic genuine ones while they look good are useless for off roading.)
Cheers, Brendan.

Maybe I go to a different Landrover dealer. Full set cost me $125 and I fitted them myself in less than half an hour - only tool required is a stumpy phillips head screwdriver.

Wow. I got trade price at $125 for front and $135 for rear. I was going to import from uk. Have you got a receipt or some proof so I can get LR in melb to match. How does plastic cost so much?

not genuine, but cheap to replace if you damage them.
eBay has a huge number of them using "discovery 4 mudflaps" as the search.
Might grab a spare set. They are much more flexible it seems.

I ended up getting some of the above mudflaps from china off eBay. About 80 bucks. They came in a week and fitted like a glove. No probs at all. I still can't tell if they are genuine or not?
I am going to see how these go and make a decision on the stone stomper as the next step for long dirt road trips. This isn't an immediate requirement yet. Have untill September for this decision. The way I think stone stomper vs. rear window breaking = stone stomper.
I had a look making some mud flaps, thanks for the advice, but ended up not going down this track as the price was not much different to the eBay price for all the parts. Plus it would have required effort on behalf to do this, i took the easy option first.

They are a good copy of the oem ones of course, but have a really close look at the way they spell "Rover" in the embossed logo ...
You will see it is "Land Rovef" - yes with an "F" on the end instead of the "R".

Les.

Just checked it out. No definately LAND ROVER in caps. Came in bags with the LR part number stickers on them too. Only thing I can pick is one of the instructions was photocopied upside down.

Hi All,

As requested some pics of the mud flaps I made up out of super hard plastic stuff. No idea what it is called but as used by the rally/comp cars. I made a template up first out of some more flexible plastic I could cut with scissors. I used the template to align mark the mountng holes out on the flap. On the rear I used the two holes n the inner liner and added another screw through the bottom edge of the bumper at the lowest point as it appeared to need some more support I used M6 nuts and bolts with washers on the rear. The fronts use the standard screws in the inner liner. Note the shape of the mud flaps the rears are as wide as I felt comfortable going and as low as I felt was necessary I used a stick from rear edge of tyre to rear bumber such that the flap did not intrude into the departure angle you could go lower. I also trimmed out a shape to have adequate clearance from the exhaust. For the fronts I had to trim around bumps in the inner liner to ensure I achievied a flush fit with the inner liner. The fronts are mainly there to stop mud being thown up on the door handles! and the lower edge of door. I have been in real off road situatons with them on and they scraped but did not appear to sustain any damage. I am yet to test them reversing n sand or mud as they are not as long as they could be I am semi confident that whilst they will touch the tyre they are not actually reaching under the tyre enough to get ripped off.
