Hi Guys,

I've just joined the forum, as I'm interested in a Disco 2 and doing a bit of touring round Victoria and maybe further a field.

I'm targeting a TD5 auto 2a, hopefully with all the bells and whistles. My price range is between 10K - 20K, but need to part exchange my car to reach the top end. I'm in 2 minds if I want to part with my current car (Toyota Celica Group A Rallye), but currently haven't the space for 2 cars.

I've done a fair bit of reading of the potential issues and things too look for, and have compiled the attached spread sheet to tick of things when looking at Disco's.

I've had a quick look at the Disco in the attached link, looks in good nick. Going to have a thorough going over on Saturday, but did notice that the tailgate wouldn't close properly. Looked like the lower hinge had been bent stopping a good seal at the top when closed. Does anyone know how easy it is to realign or change tailgate hinges?

One last thing, does anyone know how to check if the sunroof leaks or not. what to look for when inspecting vehicles?

Thanks for all your help
Rich

The vehicle in the ad is MY2000 is a D2, without centre diff lock. D2a's have a centre diff lock, different head lights, upgradable ECU etc. At 231k on the odo for this model you will need to know the service history. If you know what you are getting into and what needs to be addressed, then it might be a good vehicle. Don't know if the price is fair for this condition / kms etc in Victoria - always haggle !!

That is what I paid for my 04 d2a only 6-8 months ago with 165km on it and an auto td5 with full service history from the local land rover dealer. I reckon that's a pretty high price.

Thanks for the replies guys, the cheapest D2a is at 18K and 250km in Vic.

Not sure if it feasible to look out of state for one, but might have a look any way.

Are there any particular issues to watch out for with the V8 Petrol engine?

I went to Perth from Adelaide for mine. My only disappointment was there's some paint fade on the roof and bonnet, so he threw in a 3/4 length rhino rack and bars worth just as much if not more, as it would cost to get the bonnet resprayed. I flew over for the weekend, mixed some business with pleasure, and essentially added $600 to the cost of the vehicle, but it was still worth it. When I got mine there were absolutely no d2a's for sale in SA. When I paid a deposit on the one in Perth the next day a major ford dealer in Adelaide put one for sale in thier yard for $29k with the same km but leather seats. Hence my $15k looked even better. I would not hesitate to look all over Australia and thn factor in the cost of going for a weekend away and driving it back, or getting it shipped back. I've done it 3 times now and each time it has been well worth it.

Thanks for the advice.

Had a look at a few today, but they were all dealers and would offer me any money on my trade in :(

Have seen a 2003 v8 in NSW for 11k, do the v8 engines have any issues?

Never owned or driven a V8 but have heared of 24lt/100km being fairly normal consumption. to much for me. Pay more for a Td5 Chip it for more grunt and even better economy and make up for the higher purchase price on 9ltr/100km economy and higher resale when you are done with it. that if you can ever bring yourself to sell it. these trucks become part of the family.

I have heard the v8 have head issues and the cylinder liners slip or something like that.

Have a look at the auctions

I think this will be 10K or less, just watch out for a D2a they do come up.
2000 Land Rover Discovery II 5D S/Wagon - Used Car for Sale - Manheim (http://www.manheim.com.au/pcv/items/3358671/2000_land_rover_discovery_ii_5d_s-wagon'referringPage=SearchResults)

what you save on the purchase makes up for having to sell your other car yourself and gives you change to add some toys.

That would be abnormal for a D2a. More like 17-18 litre/100km. If you were towing 2.5 tonnes you might hit 24litre/100km.

Get this: 2004 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY TD5 03MY SUV Private Cars For Sale in NSW - carsales.com.au (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/land-rover-discovery-2004-12327183?YearFromShort=1644&silo=Stock&SearchAction=N&cr=9&eapi=2&vertical=Car&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965541% 204294965540%201644%201622%20244)

td5, manual, low mileage, cdl... looks almost like my d2a minus few mods

No offence to any d2 owners out there but d2a's are superior to early d2's :D
